Is there anyone here with GD using Bioidentical Hormones?

My sister-in-law and I just happened to be talking one day and I found out that she is hypo and just started to see and Endo in the Pittsburgh area that works with Bioidentical hormones. I got a book about this to read more about it and so far it seems pretty interesting and makes sense.

With bioidentical your Dr. does a long list of blood panels to see what your body is doing, then the Dr. see’s where you need to be and then a bioidential hormone cream is made just for your body needs.

Of course I am in limbo until July 7th (my next Dr. appt) with the treatment of my thyroid so I wouldn’t even think about changing anything just yet but bioidetentical is a more natural way of making one’s body more healthy. I’m still in the early stages of research on this topic, I will update as I go along if anyone is interested.

Brenda – I have heard of bioidentical hormones for women’s health (estrogen, etc) but confess to not knowing as much about them for thyroid. I am wondering how they compare as far as cost???? Anything that keeps your hormones in balance is what works – I am not sure if there is an advantage to paying more for something bioidentical. Cathy

Actually if you think about it any replacement hormone we are given for thyroid replacement are bioidentical hormones. They are biologically equivalent to what our body produces. They are replacement hormones for what we no longer produce.
We had a specialty pharmacist come to one of our conferences. She and her husband run a compound pharmacy here in Melbourne Florida. They make levothyroixin (the generic thyroid replacement) in a number of different ways. They have put it into a cream, pills and even in suckers for children who would not take the pills.
It costs more to have them made, but the hormone is the same that we can get in pill form. So unless you cannot take the pill form, a different way of getting it into your system may be cost prohibitive.
