Hi all: I was diagnosed with GD in mid-March and have been on PTU – for the past few weeks I have had an increase in heart rate and have become hypertensive. MY BP has been staying around 152-160/90’s I went to see a cardiologist per my internist and the cardiologist wants me to start a beta blocker and I am scheduled for an echocardiogram to make sure there is no other underlying heart problems. my main concern is the side effects of the beta blocker, he told me it can cause lethargy and depression – both of which I do not need more of because of GD and I am kind of confused about how this med works with PTU as well (my pharmacist told me that PTU can interact with the beta blocker by making it clear my body quicker). I did make a follow up appt with my endo for next week to get a sense of how all of this fits in context to GD. I have some good days and bad days as everyone experiences with GD and definitely worse days around my monthly – been real real bad the past few months it feels like my insides are exploding. If anyone can share their experiences with the beta blocker and if I should be looking for any other symptoms to bring to my docs attention.
    Peace. Lisa

    Hi Lisa,

It is very common to be on beta blockers with anti-thyroid drugs. You did the right thing asking the pharmacist. The Beta blocker will help to protect your heart from working too hard. It is a wise thing your doctor is doing. The heart can be damaged by working too hard when we are hyper. With the cardogram you and your doctor will have a good baseline to compare your later heart readings.

It is very normal what they are suggesting. Talk to the cardiologist when you go in for your test. Tell him or her your concerns.

Let us know how much better you feel after you go on the Beta Blockers.

Hi Jake: thanks for replying, just taking it all in stride right now, I am a type of person that is always curious about the ‘why this and that happens’ and need to organize the processes in my mind! and with GD this is difficult to do <img decoding=” title=”Smile” /> I had the echo yesterday and though I still need final confirmation from the cardiologist, the results are showing impaired LV relaxation which can explain why I am hypertensive – not sure if this is serious or something that is ‘normal’ for my age. I am sure I will find out in the next day or so what the next steps need to be and hopefully it is something I can live with and no need for any other intervention. Will keep you posted. Lisa
