Dear Powergirl,
I think it is always better to stay away from Beer and alcohol especially when we have AT drugs. (or completely whatsoever). My opinions might be different because I have come from a country(India) where drinking alcohol itself is considered bad for health. They are known to harm our body a little bit atleast. The facilitators can advise you better. Thank You Aravindh

I would definitely ask your doctor about alcohol consumption … I don’t recall any specific instructions about alcohol from my endo when I was taking meds. I don’t drink at all — not even before I was diagnosed with Graves.

I probably would play it safe rather than sorry until I found out the answer from my doc. It’s an interesting question to ask, though.

As far as I know, alcohol consumption is not contra-indicated while taking ATDs, but as always, best to check with your doctor. Considering the prevalence of alcohol in the U.S. society, you would think it’d be clearly stated if it were forbidden. I took methimazole for a short period of time and was not told to avoid alcohol.

Hey
never been a big drinker but when I was first diagnosed 4 years ago and on high meds they never mentioned staying away from alcohol. I did find however if I had a half glass of wine (which is my limit usually   ) at that stage where the thyroid wasn’t very controlled then I had tachycardia. It may be worthwhile having it confirmed though.

Everything in moderation is my motto but I guess you don’t want to have any problems with the meds

Hi,

I am a 44 year old female with Graves and I’ve been on 150mg of PTU (divided in 3 doses per day) for three weeks. I have mild hyperthyroidism. I am also on 40 mg of propanolol per day. I am feeling better, but won’t have new labs drawn for 3 weeks. I know PTU can rarely cause liver damage. I was wondering is it okay to drink say one beer a week while taking PTU. I can’t find anything stating that alcohol is contraindicated with PTU. I did find that PTU has an off label use to treat end-stage liver disease which I thought was weird since supposedly it can damage the liver.

Yep dr didn’t say I couldn’t either and when I asked him he said it should be fine. Again though you shoudl talk to your dr. about this. Please don’t worry about feeling silly about asking about that sort of thing. Better to ask than not know.

I made sure to specifically ask if i was allowed to have a few glasses of wine once in awhile..and was told it was fine in moderation. Of course, like everyone has said..safe bet to just ask your dr

Truly I think we will all agree that some of the best advice here is to listen to your body.
I tried a mixed cocktail and didnt tollerate it very well…tachycardia, etc.
Got the same results with beer, although
Wine (due to the sulfiates in it, which most people have problems with) I am fine. So now it is my enjoyment drink of choice. I don’t do it all the time, just the occassional social drink. Moderation and listen to your body and you will be fine.
Just remember to try to enjoy life, that is the best we can do!
