When I was hyper, I was always starving, but when it came time to eat I could barely eat a thing. This disease does seem to really screw up ones metabolism and such. Even now, in remission I still have problems when it comes to food and such. I’ll be positively starving, but 2 bites of something and I’m full. I still wind up cooking dinner, filling my plate and not eat, even if I haven’t tasted the food for spices. Of course then there are days when I can go thru a buffett several times and still be a bit hungry after. I figure my bod knows what is going on it makes sure I get enough calories to keep functioning. I make sure I get a multi-vitamin every day just to make sure I’m not losing out too much on suppliments.

    Hi Dar,
Everybody reacts differently when hyper some people lose weight others gain weight. When I was diagnosed I was consuming about 15,000 calories a day, I was constantly hungry. The more food I ate the more weight I would lose.
After having RAI my mindset was still thinking I could eat all of those calories. So I had to make a MAJOR cutback.
It was fun while it lasted:) But the other side affects are what had me go to the doctor.

Do you have a goiter which would cause you to not be able to swallow? Also have you talked to your doctor about not being able to eat? Balanced nutrition is necesary to get healthy again. So try to do the best you can by eating.
    Mention this to your doctor.

    Best wishes,

Dar, Toward the end before i was diagnosed, it got so i couldn’t eat much nor did i want to. Then after treatment(with RAI) iwas okay untl i went hypo. I didn’t want to eat then either. Actually i’ve responded a little differently than others. Now that i am euthyroid(normal range although closer to the hyper end of the scale),i am hungry and starting to put on weight. In fact i’ve caught myself wanting to eat almost as much as i did in the earlier stages of my Graves disease.
Guess this disease like other diseases affects each of us differently

dar – I have a terrible time with eating when I’m hyper – really bad nausae, stomach cramping and diarrhea, plus the smell of food makes me gag too. I’ve found that drinking lots of herbal tea (no caffeine) and “sports drinks” and plain water helps (carbonated drinks seem to bother m) to stay hydrated. Also my MD suggested trying to eat white rice b/c it bulks up the stool snad is apparently very healthy for you (he says when there are cholera outbreaks in India the people survive on basically rice water and rice). With the “sports drinks” and rice I can usually get my stomach back on track enough to move to a more varied, but still pretty bland, diet. Good luck!

i have been on synthroid for about 7 months now, and i still have problems with my appetite. initially, i could eat and eat and eat and have no problems, but lately(for the past 5 months or so), i have been really nauseous, with little or no appetite, and my doctor stresses that i must eat. is there anything that i can do to increase my appetite?

    thanks!
