Hi all,
So I was diagnosed with Graves in March. It has been quite a ride since then. I was started on 20 mgs of methimazole a day and atonolol. Five weeks ago I was taken off the atonolol and my methimazole was dropped to 10 mgs a day as my Free t4 and free t3 were back within normal range. I do more blood work tomorrow and see the endo next week. Before all of this my husband and I were discussing trying for a third and final little one. Now I am not sure if this is even a safe possibility. All the Dr.s say it is and that I would be switched to PTU if we decided to go for it. Obviously I want to get down to a maintenance dose of medication first but I wanted to know if anyone on the board has gotten pregnant on ATD’s? If so, what was your experience? Thanks for any input you may have.
Hello and welcome! We do have posters here who have had healthy babies while on anti-thyroid drugs, so hopefully, they will chime in.
The first priority is to get your levels to where they are normal and stable, as being either hyper or hypo during pregnancy is dangerous for both mother and baby.
The following link is to a great resource document from the American Thyroid Association on thyroid disease and pregnancy. The section on Graves’ starts on page 1094 of the original journal article (page 14 if you download as a PDF).
(Note on links: if you click directly on the following link, you will need to use your browser’s “back” button to return to the boards after viewing, or you will have to log back in to the forum. As an alternative, you can right-click the link and open it in a new tab or new window).

Hi NikkiK,
I don’t have a lot of time right now (busy with kid related stuff:))but if you search by my user name, you can read several lengthy posts I have written about my experiences with post-partum onset and getting pregnant on ATDs. I would be happy to answer any additional questions you might have.
Welcome to the board and take care.
Laurel
I definitely haven’ t and hopefully won’t.
Make that “definitely’ won’t.
I’ll bet you regret that whole thing about “Thanks for any input you might have” right about now, huh?
Be healthy!
Boomer
Thanks for the information so far! Please keep it coming. For those of you that have had children on ATD’S were your little ones okay? Any complications?
Hi again-
Just doing another quick check-in inbetween running around with end of school year kid activities. Have you had a chance to use the Search Posts feature? If you put in pregnancy or breastfeeding, you will get a long list of posts to read from several different posters.
