I have not had the knee pain but have hip pain pretty much daily for the past year. I am not sure if it is related to the Graves or to the fact that I had my thyroid removed but it is there and it is real. Somedays it is so bad and sharp that I feel like I could cry as well. People do not really understand or just dont want to hear the complaints. I have really tried to have a more positive attitude and tried not to talk to people who are not going through the same thing. I hope you have some pain free days. YOu really have to way all your options and chose what is best for you. I decided on the surgery. I am glad I made that decision but there are plenty of people on the board that had RAI and are pleased with their results. I hope you can make a decision and be happy with it. I was on the PTU for 3 years and unfortunately was never able to come off of it and that is why I went with surgery. I hope this helps and know that we are all hear to listen to you. Things will get better it just takes time. Katie
I’ve been on medication Prophylthiouracil since Dec. My last doctos appointment , he gave me three options. 1. Stay on medcation for one more year and see what happens. 2. Radation 3. Surgery which he feels I would be best suited for that option.
He have given me Ibuprofen 800 for the pain that starts from my knees all the way down. I am never even with the medications able to get rid of the pain and what feels like swelling. I just spend a hour crying and found this site. My doctor knows of my pain but doesn’t seem concerned. I hate feeling sorry for myself, and often try to hide my pain from my children , family , and my husband. I also have pain in my eyes all the time. I keep hoping to get better, I don’t want to do radation. I’m really against it, I just don’t want to do that to my body. Nobody seems to understand. I’m only 31 years old and I have trouble doing my daily chores , like going to the store, getting my children from school because I can’t park near the school and I have to walk and its just so painful
Anyone else have this problem? Please tell me I am not alone. Why would you not want to do RAI? Sorry don’t understand………….
Maybe you should get some good books about GD and read up on the disease.
Meds that you are taking help some for a while, but not long. A more permant solution to GD is to get rid of the thyroid. RAI is as easy as taking a pill and go back to work or home. You feel more hyper for a while afterwards but that means you are on your way to recovery. Once hypo you take synthroid and find the correct dosage and life begins again.
You will get well, but it just seems to me your Dr. is listening to your symptoms.Did you have less pain in your legs and knees before you started taking the anti-thyroid drug? In my case, I had a negative reaction to the drugs, rare, but it does happen. My first endo refused to take me seriously. My second endo called it right away and knew what was happening. I must tell you that even 11 months post-op I do have knee pain that comes and goes, not nearly as bad as before.

Yes I had knee pain before the medications. I had complained to my doctors who just kinda shoved me off. They said they couldn’t find anything wrong with me. How it got found out what the real problem was , was when I went to my female doctor because I had a breast lump. While in there I told him how I had lost intrest in sex. I guess he knew what he was looking for. I about broke down when it finally came out with what I had. All the time of doctors telling me nothing was wrong with me, I thought I was going insane. The pain has never gone away. There might a a few minutes throughout the day it won’t hurt, but that is it for me. I don’t understand because my blood tests on the medcation are coming back normal. He is keeping me on the current dosage of 100mg that is broken up into every 6 hours. I just assumed with medcation I would get better, I haven’t. If the tests show its normal then why do I still have the problems?
Hi Rsmith,
Just a quick comment — “myalgia” (tenderness in the muscles) is listed as a possible “minor” side effect of methimazole (the generic for Tapazole). I have a friend who experienced fairly severe pain in her joints when she attempted treatment with Tapazole, and once she stopped, the pain went away (in time).
I’m not sure if that would be the case for you. We’re all different, and of course there are thousands of reasons for joint pain….
