Hello Meg – My daughter, Kelley (Her message is right below yours) is 23 years old and has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. She is starting medication today to try to regulate her heart rate and thyroid, and then we will have to decide whether to go with surgery or RAI. My older daughter, Monica, got GD at age 21. She took the RAI, and has had decompression surgery. She is now 26, feels fine, and looks really good. We live in New Mexico, but went to UCLA for her decompression.

Please write back, I know Kelley would really appreciate hearing from you.

    Thanks,

    Margaret

I need to know if there are any young people out there going through this. I’m 23 yrs old and having a hard time coping with this! I don’t feel like going in public or seeing friends. I hate this GD!!!!!!!!!!

Kelley & Monica’s Mom and Caroline:

I appreciate all your words and support. It is really tough and I’m so glad I found this BB…very helpful (especially when you want to vent and people actually understand). I’m relieved to know there are actually people my age who are going through this. I promise myself 1997 is going to be a good year for me—-all about health!

Please email me at suzeeQ222@aol.com. I would also like to know how Monica and Kelley are doing because I have a younger sister too. Will she get GD eventually. I’m really worried. Thanks so much again!!!! : )

Lori Harmstead is the Young Adult Support Group Leader for the Graves’ Foundation.. Her Phone number is 609-918-0878. It’s tough to have this just when you are beginning to take on life, but like anything else, the more you know, the better you can deal with it. YOU ARE NOT ALONE!
