Does anybody have any experience or information about how antidepressants interact with Graves? I’ve had more than one small set back where life stress has caused me to lose progress and need more methimazole. I’m looking at a BIG long period of stress coming up and I’m pretty worried on how this will affect the Graves.
As far as I can tell, no interaction. I was on anti-depressants (for anxiety) long before I was diagnosed with Graves and have never had to change the dosage. Go for it…. if there is help available to you, take it.
SueThanks Sue and a pm coming your way!
Hello – Like Sue, I’m not familiar with any specific interactions, but this would be a good question for your doctor or pharmacist.
Honestly, though, since it sounds like the trigger you are dealing with is 100% external, I don’t how much antidepressants would help. An experienced psychiatrist should be able to help you sort through these issues and figure out the benefits of medications vs. developing specific coping skills (building a support network, dumping/delegating non-critical tasks, maintaining your self-care routine, etc.) during this difficult period.
Wishing you all the best!
I was on a merry go round of meds before I finally figured out it was the Graves’ making me nuts. (Lithium was my next step but I threw the brakes on short of filling that script)
None of them helped except for Valium, and that just made me doped up so I didn’t really care. (At some points, that is exactly what I needed, don’t get me wrong.)
Some pills work great for treating symptoms (as does meditation, I learned) but the underlying cause needs to be attacked to see real progress, IMO.
Whatever the root of your stress is, I hope you find relief soon.
Thanks Kimberly and AZGravesGuy! Good to know that there aren’t any known problems with antidepressants and Graves. AZGG – I still have hopes to get my meditation more regular, it does help when I can do it. Right now I’m raising my methimazole dosage so I’ll be a little bit less hyper soon so hopefully that will make the path clearer too.
