StacyA – I’m sorry to hear this, but it’s good that your doc did the additional testing to give you a definitive diagnosis. The “Treatment Options” thread in the announcements section of the forum would be a good place to start for some additional resources.

There are regular posters here who have been through the 3 different options (anti-thyroid drugs, RAI, surgery) and have had success. It seems that the patients who are happiest with their outcomes are those who do their own research (from credible sources) on the risks and benefits of each options, consult with their medical team, and then make an informed decision. I know it’s overwhelming right now, but you *will* get through this!

    Wishing you all the best!

    Hello StacyA,

I’m sorry to hear that your antibody came back positive :(

Was it the TPOab? or TSI?

My TPOab and TSI are also elevated. After 5 months of treatment, my TSI has gone down some. From what I’ve read, it is possible for the TSI to decrease. Please hang in there. It is not easy getting the results back. The good thing is that we have options to treat this terrible disease and their is hope that we will feel better.

I wish you the very best in your GD journey.

    Caro :)

Hugs to you Stacy. I know it’s hard when you get confirmation. In the beginning my case was unclear and I was hoping so much it wasn’t too. Then my endo saw my TSI result and said well that settles it and it felt like a door shutting. Still you are in good company here – lots of people with experience on this board to help you.

I, too am sorry Stacey. My antibodies (TSI) is currently 800

I was devastated but at least I know what’s wrong with me. That is the positive thing. It’s better than wondering and wondering – all crazy things go through your mind!

That’s why we are here. We are your support!!!!!!! Hang in there, I’m trying too

Thanks everyone for your continued support, it helps get through this. Id like to buy at least a yr on the methimazole then have the surgery..but that’s if I don’t have side effects and if it works sufficiently. I am meeting with the endo Monday to discuss the plan … what should I ask her aside from the obvious?

Ill find out if she did a tpoab… that result was tsi.

Vanillasky, 800? I bet that’s why they were sure you had Hashimotos..that typically presents with much higher levels than grave’s …800 is high.

    I’d ask…
    – which test does she use most to determine dosage changes? (if she says tsh only proceed with caution but sadly many endos seem not know that in graves the tsh is unreliable)
    – how much weight does she give your symptoms in determining dosage changes?
    – how often will she test your TSH, FT3, and FT4? (and if she’s not doing free t’s why not)
    – will she be willing to do TSI testing and wait until it is low before letting you wean off the medicine to try for remission as opposed to a rigid timeline like 12 months and then you are off it

    Stacey: just want to clarify.

TSI is indicative of Graves’ Disease

    TPO is indicative of Hashimotos

My tests showed that my TPO has always been in normal range or even slightly elevated. According to the two endos, I never had Hashimotos.

TSI is Graves negative with values <150. My value at present is 800.

I was flagged for Graves a few years ago when my value was 174, yet they did nothing about it. Now look what has happened.

TPO antibodies are indicators of thyroid inflammation and does not necessarily mean it is Hashimotos. Most people with Graves also have TPO antibodies some more than others. To see if you have Hash’s you would need to have TgAb labs run.

And yes, TSI shows you have Graves. So by vanillasky’s values, I would have about 1000 TSI antibodies. Mine currently are 10.6 (<1.8).

Thanks, Naisly. I wish these idiot doctors had run these tests years ago.

I had to go 4 hours away to find out what was wrong with me. So many years wasted of my life.
