As i have said in previous posts, i had a serious problem with weight gain before and after i was diagnosed with graves. In march i decided to take control of things follow atkins and successfully lost 50lbs that i had gained. The problem is for some reason despite the healthy eating and healthy calorie intake i am losing weight and not even trying. My appetite is almost gone and i find myself forcing myself to eat because i’m just not hungry. In the past month alone i’ve lost 10lbs and i’m reaching the point of not looking healthy. At 5"4 i’m down to 110 and i know thats to thin and its frustrating me. I know that most people wouldn’t complain and i don’t want to sound whiny but i’m wondering if my thyroid levels are off again. I called my endo (who is really annoying me) told him the problem and he basically responded its no big deal. Can a loss of appetite be caused by the methimazole, or can rapid weight loss without even trying be a sign a that my levels are off? Again i’m not tring to brag or sound whiny but i’m starting to worry and feel like something is wrong and my endo isn’t helping.

    Thanks
    Jessica

    Hi, Jessica:

If it were me, I would schedule a visit with my GP (since the endo seems to be uninterested). Unexplained weight loss could indeed be related to aberrant thyroid levels, but it could also be due to some other health issue.

Agree 100% with Bobbi that this warrants a visit to the doctor *just* to make sure you aren’t dealing with hyperthyroidism again or any other physical issues.

Assuming everything checks out, here is one other issue to consider: after completing a successful weight loss plan, the body sometimes wants to stay in "losing" mode. The trick is to slowly add calories back until your body shifts out of "losing" mode and into "maintenance" mode. (Not so many calories that you regain the weight, but enough that your weight stabilizes where you want it to be).

thanks for the responses i’m going to make an appointment to see my family doctor to have everything checked out and make sure my thyroid levels aren’t off again or something else is wrong. Hopefully my family doctor will take the time to help me and not just blow me off like the endo did.
