    Hi Julie

I’ve never heard of ankle swelling being caused by Graves Disease. There are so many reasons why a person’s ankle swelling and it depends on how much they are swollen. As long as you had pointed them out to the doctor and he wasn’t worried, the only thing that I would do is if it is still going on when you see him again, or would get worse because your appointment, be sure and mention it to him.

    Hi Julie,

Swelling in the ankles, feet, and hands is associated with hypothyroidism. I have had feet swelling since the beginning of Graves, but it was more anoying than painful. But, since RAI the ankles and hands are swollen most of the time. They swell up then go down, then back up again within minutes. I have told the doctor’s nurse each time I talk to them after my bloodwork is done, but they do not seem to be concerned. It is really effecting me at work. I am a secretary and I do a lot of typing and also running back and forth in the office. I go to my endo and pc next week. Someone is going to have to do something. I get some relief by extending and stretching.

    Hang in there!

Julie, Every time I go to my Endo, she also checks to see if my ankles are swollen, so does my internist. They do it because they believe it effects my blood pressure. The first time I was put on a water pill to reduce swelling, it had an immediate effect on lowering my blood pressure.

I tried to find some information on swelling of the ankles due to Graves’ and best I can find is when we are hypo our body is slowing down and that “may” cause some swelling. But ask your doctor for a referal to a dermetologist.

Swelling of the shins and ankles could actually be pretibial mexademia. That is another autoimmuine disease where the underlying layers of skin are attacked by antibodies causing them to swell and itch.

A treatment of topical cortizone works well for most folks. Some need to take steroids but it is worth having it checked early.

Thank you Jake. I am Hyper, but half way to normal in 1 1/2 months. I will look into the other and have it checked.

    Thank you again.
