Sue,
I don’t know anything specific for you to do but keep going with the compounding pharmacy. If you are allergic to the fillers they can certainly find a way to help you out. I work at a pharmacy school here in NC. I am a staff person. I called someone there and they said that you could have your doctor get some help from the nearest Drug Information Center. They are usually at hospitals or in pharmacy schools. You can use an internet search to find one. The one here in our school doesn’t take questions from lay people only medical types so your doctor would have to contact this one. Others may take questions from the public it just depends.

If you want to talk with someone in the nearest pharmacy school ask for the person who teaches pharmaceutics.

Hope that you get some help soon.

I was diagnosed with Graves Disease 36 months ago. Ended up having RAI for the extreme hyperthyroidism. Fine that wasn’t all that bad. I have been hypo for about 23 months and have been having allergic reactions to all the thryoid replacement drugs. Tried Synthroid (ended up in the hospital with severe reaction, had epinephrin and oxygen for 3 days, face swollen to bad they packed it in ice) Levothyroxine(face and tongue swells, hives awful chest pressure, Levoxyl, Thyrolar, Cytomel(all the same as levothyroxine) i changed Drs because the one I was seeing was almost 2 hours away from my home. Now I see a local endo, but we are still having problems finding a medication for me. I like Armour because at least I AM GETTING SOMETHING, BUT HE DOESN’T LIKE IT. I have been w/o out a medication on a daily basis for the past 6 months. My TSH is 36 and I feel really rotten. He claims that it isn’t dangerous at that level. We are in the process of trying a compounding pahrmacy and have found that I am allergic to avicellulose and methylcellulose. He has contacted Abbot Pharm and is waiting for the chemist to call him back. In the mean time I really do not feel well. This morning I just took 1/4 grain of Armour just to get through thwe day. DOES ANYONE HAVE A SUGGESTION AS TO WHAT I CAN DO AT THIS POINT? I am extremely exhausted, have the chest discomfort my whole body ahces and am not sure where to turn . Thank you Sue

wow. I am so sorry you had to go through all that. I bet it was scary. I hope you seek a good medication/natural remedy to help you become stable. I just started synthroid a week ago. I didnt experience that at all. Just goes to show you how different everyone is. your in my prayers..

thats definately true, some people can take just about anything and not have a problem. My compounding pharmacist called me on friday and had spoken to a colleague of his who suggested using a transdermal cream thryoid replacement, he said that he had success treating people with allergies that way. Now all I have to do Is talk my Dr into it. But after all the things tha we have unsuccessfully tried I think that this would be a good option, not having to worry about the fillers that they use. Thank you for your reply and prayers, can use all the help I can get.

So glad that you have been able to find a new avenue to try. Did you ask the compounding pharmacist if you actually need a separate new scrip for this new formulation? Just wondering, I try to file tidbits away in my head for times I might need them.

Reached another one of those stone walls with the transdermal, the hormone that they use is Syntroid and since I had a really bad reaction to the pills and the injections its a no go. But I do have a question that maybe you can help me with. My endo wants me to go go Washington DC to the National Integrative Health Assos. I checked on line and they do not accept my insurance and also I am not in a position to drop everything and run to Washington. How do I find an alternative practitoner in Upstate New York and would an allergist be of assistance for me. I have an appointment with an alergist on Saturday to test me for food allergies. Also when I was in the hospital last month for the 7 days as a result of taking Synthroid, I did not see my normal endo. The one that I did see, my son sees, told my son that he can definately help me and to call and make an appointment, he will make time to see me. He is local and his office is in the hospital where I was, Will I look like I am jumping around and my insurance company will drop me? I have an HMO>BUT on the other hand if he CAN help me and get me back to somewhat normal I think its worth a try. What do you think? Thank you

I’d say try the other local endo. He may have experience that you need. I went to see another endo in the middle of my bad times. I didn’t even tell the other endo that I was going. The other one was in another town at a different hospital. Turned out that he didn’t understand my issues either. Do you have to have a referral to see a specialist? If so that may be an issue. I would still say that you are asking for a second opinion if necessary for the insurance to be happy. Then if you want to change permanently you will have permission if needed.

Have you been able to get in touch with a drug information center? They really do have access to things that doctors don’t and they can contact drug companies quickly for answers. The can do a literature search for you and have access to databases etc. Pharmacists are the professionals who understand drugs the most. Doctor’s really aren’t given enough training in school to be able to help you with a problem like this on their own. I will ask the DI Center here about what’s available in NY.

A cousin of mine had allergies to the synthroid and found out that it was a dye they use in it so she found a pharmacy that was able to get a medication without the dye. Problem solved!
