Check with a pharmacist, but if I remember correctly PTU can cause liver damage, just like Tapazole, in rare cases. With any drug like this it is best to limit alcohol consumption when you are taking it.

My friend has recently been given strong precautions by her endo against drinking while on Tapazole, and I was wondering if the same is true with PTU? Should someone taking PTU limit their alcohol intake?

Is it a problem to have 1 alcoholic drink while I am on PTU?

The best source for answers on a question like this one is your pharmacist and your doctor.

PTU is metabolized in the liver, and is known to cause some people problems as a result. Whether one alcoholic beverage now and then can adversely affect things (because alcohol is also metabolized in the liver) is a question for doctors and pharmacists. We do not have any specific information on that for you.

I’ve decided I can live without alcohol for the next couple of years if it helps.

I have not found any information on the interaction between alcohol and PTU, but I have noticed that since starting on PTU I can no longer have a drink without feeling exstremely dizzy so have chose to stay away.

This disease and its treatment is serious. I do not drink any alcohol (beer, wine or liquor) or take mood-altering drugs (that are not prescribed by my doc). Getting a level of balance with ALL blood tests is key to feeling better. Joy in NoGA mtns.

I actually wasn’t tolerating alcohol well for several months before I was diagnosed. It would hit me harder and faster and really got my heart going – even from just a few drinks. And recovery from a night out would take days. It was puzzling.

Then I got really sick with Graves, was diagnosed … so I guess my intolerance of alcohol was due to Graves.

And now that I am on PTU which is metabolized by the liver, like alcohol, I have decided I have no need or desire to put more stress on my body (liver) than is necessary.

I can live without drinking. I don’t think I would have said that 6 months ago though!!!

Quit smoking in February, quit drinking in June. Should have done quit a long time ago! I’m saving quite a bit of cash!
