That is actually a really rare side effect but its monitored the whole time your on the ATD’S. I know when it happens you are immediately taken off the medication.

I’m very interested in this as well. I’m not so sure that my Endo dr. has tested me for this?? If they take blood tests, which one detects Agranulocytosis?

White blood cell count is the measurement that will show agranulocytosis.

How many of you experienced this as a side effect of your ATD medications? TIA

Thanks Ski, I understand the white blood count, but do you know if it’s reflected in eosinophils, basophils, neutrophils, monocytes or lymphocytes? Is there a specific blood test that they run and request any of these in particular?? Just curious what I should be looking for since when I looked back at my bloodwork, I noticed on one test they looked at all of my white blood cells and they were listed separately as above. Thanks for any insight anyone can provide while Ski’s away enjoying life!!

    Hey,

Ok been there done that! Yes they monitor your WBC at each TFT – or well they should do! I am sure its the neutrophils that they monitor but think they take a full blood count to ensure nothing else is being altered…bilirubin etc… That happened to me after the thyroid storm and they took me off the carbimazole for 2 weeks redone my bloods but I had to change to PTU. If you are at all anxious just ask casually "oh how are these WBC"s behaving?"

Try not to worry too much these things are usually caught within a safe time frame! xxx

Thanks hyperm for responding…I think that I’ll casually ask how my WBC is next week when I go back to my Endo since I just went yesterday for a series of bloodwork. It seems my Endo dr. is always cking my calcium (b/c I have osteoporosis) and vitamin D (it’s always low even though I take 50,000 IUs per wk & 1200 daily), TSH, TSI, Free 4, but I haven’t seen him run anything on a CBC, which would tell him my white blood count, right? I did notice though he’s running one new blood test this time, so I’ll ask him what it was all about!!
