Hi Jules – I’m so sorry for your frustrations…I would *think* that a medical team would understand what you are talking about when you use the word “hypothyroid!”!
Perhaps if you were to bring a hard copy of your labs with you, the medical personnel might “get” it? Or maybe the following language might work: “I have Graves’ Disease and I received Radioactive Iodine Treatment to ablate my thyroid gland xx months ago. I went extremely hypothyroid with a TSH of 67+ and have just started thyroid hormone replacement.”
Best of luck – please keep us posted on how you are doing!
LOL your statement “I have Graves’ Disease and I received Radioactive Iodine Treatment to ablate my thyroid gland xx months ago. I went extremely hypothyroid with a TSH of 67+ and have just started thyroid hormone replacement.” is what I finally had to repeat a few times, that s when they said you are a mess. Oh I had to add in and I am going through Thyroid Eye Disease. dont use TED because the medical community look at you and say what is that!
I was just wondering if when you are dealing with medical personal should you tell them Grave disease no Hypothyroid or just leave out the graves all together? I mean I have heard you will always have graves even when hypo so I assumed that I needed to tell them Graves Disease.
I would definitely include the Graves’ part, especially since you are dealing with TED as well. Of couse, there’s no guarantee that the medical personnel will know what you are talking about, but at least you are giving them full disclosure!
Ok now that I have graves for 6 months and I have had RAI and now I am extremely hypo 67.25 TSH (Went from .0006 to 67.25 in 8 weeks) what am I when I go to the hospital. What is the best way to discribe yourself so medical personal know who you are and what you are dealing with?
I had to make a trip to the ER with Extreme Hypo issue. Trying to explain I am a graves patient who had RAI and now I am overly hypo. They just looked at my funny like i did not know what I was talking about and than commented your just a mess.
Well Yeah… um I am… that is why I am here. I tell you I thought there was nothing worse than Hyper – um I should watch what I say because the good lord is teaching me that it really wasnt as bad as I thought Hypo sucks the life out of me. I am having issue (wow what a concept) with the base in the thyroid replacement i am on my 5th try at this now. I am currently taking a 1/2 table .of the .25 Synthroid.
