    Hey guys,

Something strange is happening. I think I’m developing an allergy or side effect to Methimazole after 6 years of heavy daily usage- 40-60mg daily. I’ve taken it every day for 6 years with no side effect. Had RAI done last June and stopped it for several months until I went hyper again this month. I resumed at 30mgs a day and about 4 days In I’m developing slight redness all over my skin but no hives and a mild itching. How can this be? I’m thinking of just grinding through this for a few weeks until I get my levels right then I’ll do RAI again.

Has anyone experienced an allergy/side effect AFTER years over heavy use?

Hello – Side effects with methimazole are most common during the first 90 days of use, but the catch is that the clock starts over if you are off the meds for a while and re-start them.

I would definitely ask your doctor or pharmacist about the reaction that you are having. The medical guidance says that for “mild” skin reactions, you can continue to take the meds in combination with antihistamines, but a medical professional would be best suited to tell you if a reaction was “mild.”

A doctor can also help you sort out whether hyperthyroidism itself might be contributing to the reaction, as this can happen in some patients.

    Take care!
