Helene – I found this article on web-MD – not sure if you saw it in your web search. http://www.webmd.com/diet/acai-berries- … h-benefits

I would just say, be sure your sources are reputable – there are lots of health food dealers on the web. It is important to look at the evidance for these things – as many of the claims can be false. As with any weight loss (esp with an underlying condition like thyroid), I recommend talking with your doctor first. Though from this article – sounds like they are berrys. Cathy

        Hellie,

Interesting! I recently had a multilevel marketing person approach me about an Acai berry based drink. My response was, been there done that (referring to supplements the promise the world, but were actually detrimental to my situation). I believe the Acai berry is know for it’s antioxidant properties. I didn’t know it was marketed to assist in weight loss. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! (I know I know. . old adage).

If you were hyperthyroid and still have a functioning thyroid because of ATD therapy, you have to be especially wary of any product that makes these claims. It isn’t always the berry in itself that is the problem, but the other preservatives, and substances that they add to the drink (assuming it is a drink). Substances that could potentially trigger a Graves’ relapse. There was a product that promised the world that I was taking that may have triggered my GD in the first place (that was 15 years ago). Again, based on my personal experience, my advice would be to eat whole foods; its cheaper, better for you and you know exactly what you are putting into your body. Good choices If your aim is to keep GD at bay.

        Take care!

          Hi, all
I was diagnosed with Graves 16 months ago. After starting treatment of 60 mg of methimazole a day (I was considered "severe" with thyroid levels that were "off the charts") I am now down to 5 mg a day and feeling great….woohoo! Within 2 months of starting meds I swung down into the hypo range and have worked with my Endo to get my levels (T3, T4 and TSH) back to "normal". While in the hypo range I regained all of the weight I had lost while undiagnosed plus some….gotta love that hypothyroid! Well, now that I am feeling back to normal, for the first time in many, many years, I, like many are struggling to get this weight off. I exercise regularly and watch what I eat (most of the time <img decoding=” title=”Smile” /> ) but it is still a real struggle.

My question: has anyone tried Acai berry supplements for the weight loss? After researching it on the internet I will be the first to admit that it "sounds to good to be true" but I first heard of it while watching an Oprah Winfrey show and Dr. Oz was talking about it. Not only is it helping people to lose weight but it actually has some health benefits as well. I am really tempted…..but thought I would check here to see if anyone has tried this before I ask my Endo about it.

Wishing everyone good health for the holidays!
          Helene
