Nancy had asked for us that have gone to the training to give a first hand reply to all of you. I was sent the training book online and did read it. I must say as good as the training book is , there is nothing like meeting people face to face and asking questions. My husband and I both went for the training this past year. We had many delays with our flight because of the weather. As tiring as it was, we were so glad to get to Brevard and attend the training. The hotel staff were great about keeping Nancy informed about our delays. We got to the hotel late and the staff informed Nancy we were there and went to heat up some dinner for us. I wish I remembered the mans name. He was so kind and thoughtful. We not only got a hot meal but pie for dessert and Nancy to welcome us.
The training is very informative. It was well worth the trip. We came home with a better insight into what was expected of a support leader. I have been in many organizations, but I had never been a support leader. It is very different being a President or Vice President of an organization. I was use to doing all the talking. As a support leader you have to learn to listen and be prepared to give or find out the information a person wants. The most important thing I learned was the meaning of W.A.N.D. …..We Are Not Doctors. I am reminded of this more often than I thought I would be. As a support leader people are always asking for medical advice or what their numbers mean. These are things I can not answer. I can let a person know where to find the answers they need. As a support leader we can find doctors, nutritionist and others that can answer certain questions.
I believe a support group is very important to people with Graves’ Disease. We have a small group, but we have become good friends. Some who do not attend regularly call each other and me. It is important to have a co-leader. I am lucky to have Linda and my husband Marty as co-leaders. They have both kept me going. I encourage you all to go to the training and become a support leader. So many people need this outlet and there just are not enough of us. You will be glad you did.
