Does RAI always ablate the thyroid and the nodule (which I have)? I went for my check up and my endo said he feels my thryoid would always be “full” on the left side and the nodule is still there. I had RAI in October 2012. He said the RAI did help with my hyperthyroidism but from what I’m understanding, did not kill of the nodule and the thyroid.

Hello – Yes, RAI will generally destroy the thyroid gland as well as any “hot” nodules. (Nodules that are actively pouring out thyroid hormone).

However, a certain percentage of patients end up needing to repeat the treatment. An article from the New England Journal of Medicine from a couple of years ago noted that the RAI “failure” rate is 10-30% for patients with a single nodule. That same article also notes a 14% “failure” rate for patients who have hyperthyroidism, but NOT nodules.

Are your levels back in (or approaching) the “normal” range? If so, hopefully, you won’t need a second treatment. Please keep us posted on how you are doing!

Thanks for your response Kimberly. Yes, my levels are pretty normal and I feel good. My Synthroid dosage was just increased slightly this week. I was just surprised that my doctor felt that we would have to monitor my nodule to see if it grows and thyroid’s size.

I had mine ablated 5 years ago. Recently my right eye began to bulge and a scan revealed active thyroid tissue on both sides. I never had any nodules, just a goiter and a very hot thyroid.
