Good news! I had all three normal – TSH, FT3 and FT4, for 5 months after RAI. But, the inevitable happened, and my TSH showed hypo after 5 months. Your dosage of I131 was lower, so it would be interesting to see if they have managed to keep you eurothyroid in the long run.

Very nice to hear that you feel well though, and that you can run

p.s what would I need to be walking (in miles) to meet the equivalent of say a 4 mile run? (please don’t say 12 miles lol) xx

elf – how are you feeling now with replacement? Do you feel like your "old self" or different? Did it take a lot of work to get your levels right?

hyperm – good news— mile per mile, running doesn’t burn a whole lot more than walking, it just takes longer to walk. I don’t know exactly, some things I have read say about 100 cals per mile running and 80 walking. When I do calculators that use my weight as a basis for calories used, I usually come up with somewhere around 75 cals per mile running. Walking is GREAT! I walked 3 miles every day for 10+ years before I started running. It’s so uplifting, to notice the plants, birds, wildlife… and it makes you feel good, too. I don’t notice as much when I run, so that is really something I DID enjoy about walking with Graves’ these past few months.

I never had any problems with a dosage and never had any adjustments. Started on 100mcg of Synthroid and still plugging at it. I feel guilty reading sometimes how people struggle with finding proper replacements and proper dosage. I have felt healthy, my old self, ever since, for 3.5 years. They said something that they determined 100mcg by my weight (?) I was 130lbs then. Now am 150lbs, but still the same dosage.

I’ve had troubles with my eyes though, so can’t really say I’ve been totally my old self. But in terms of exercising, yes, I could do anything – and should have done already!

take care,

Just want to check in and say I think I’m better or very, very close. My one month labs T3 and T4 were both normal, TSH still nonexistent, but that’s expected. At one month, I was still having periods where I would feel hyper. Not anymore. I can run again- ran 7 miles yesterday and 4 today with no troubles and my heart is behaving. Resting heart rate is back to where it was before I got sick. I have gained TEN POUNDS since my sick weight – so now I need to lose 5 to get back to pre-Graves’ weight. I’m on the lookout for hypo symptoms as I expect they may be just around the next bend – but right now I feel GREAT!

I will keep everyone updated, just did my pre-registration, and asked what my dose would be 20 of the RA dose is that high? Now I am freaking out, the Radiologist told me that my doctor wants me to go Hypo. I do not want to go into being hypo right off, I am very upset, and will call my doctor, about this. I was very direct with her about a lower dose, because I really did not want to be on the medication for the rest of my life, I am ready to cancel all together

Julie, from what my Endo said you want the dose to be "too high" because if they don’t bring you to underactive you will likely be overactive over time.

I’m getting the treatment this Friday the 4th and my major concern is the eyes. I saw an Opthomologist last week and apparently I’m showing no signs of eye trouble but it sounds like that usually expresses itself later. I’m only 24 and really not looking forward to a possible lifetime of eye trouble on top of this.

Also, I’ve actually gained a ton of weight (going from 125lbs to 155lb in a year) since being diagnosed and I’m nervous that I’ll gain even more. My hope is that with this taken care of I won’t be so incredibly hungry all of the time and might return to normal…

Good luck and keep us posted!

Thanks for the support; all I want to do today is cry. I am at work, and cannot get anything done. I have not seen anyone for my eyes yet. No time, no sick time left. I am taking Friday off for the RAI without pay. I guess I should not be vain. I will try to calm down.

Good luck with your dose katet

Julie,
I hope that Friday goes well for you. Think about how you feel right now. When I had my RAI I didn’t want to ever go back to feeling like I had been when I was so hyper. Taking replacement hormone is not like taking the medication which you couldn’t. I had 15 millicuries. 20 isn’t an unreasonable dose depending on your uptake numbers etc.. Playing with trying to be "normal" isn’t a good idea in my opinion. If it doesn’t work and you stay hyper you would have to have an even larger dose the second time around and that might take up to six months after the first dose. I am waiting on numbers right now and hope that my RAI has done it’s job and I am going hypo so I can start to feel better.

I know how scary it is. I felt sure that I wouldn’t be able to walk to the hospital from the parking lot. I hope that once you have the RAI you will start to feel mentally that you are on the way to better health again. It made me feel so much better to know that I had finally gotten help that might work for me since the medication didn’t take me to remission.

Do call your doctor though and talk if you need to but the nuclear medicine folks will make the final call on the dose if they aren’t given any specifics by your endo. They will most likely not want to lowball you on the dose.

Good luck,

ewmb
