I was diagnosed with Hyper 5 years ago, it problably like most went on long before that. After 5 years of beta blockers and PTU I was finally getting to a normal level. About that time my dr suggested for the umpteen time about doing RAI. He didn’t seem like I would ever get any better. Well I went and had the 12 milicuries on March 15, nothing really happened after that but in a week or so I started feeling really nervous, like when I was hyper, I called the dr and he said to start taking the PTU again at the same dosage. And that dosage would be 6 pills 50 mg PTU 3 times a day, a total of 18 pills or 900 mg of PTU a day and 120 mg of bete blocker. Quite a lot if you ask me. Anyway I was also diagnosed with vein/artery blockages in June my legs but more so in my neck and eventually had surgery on my neck for that on June 21. So about three weeks after the surgery I felt great, felt like i could run a mile. No pains, no leg weekness felt this way for a month. Then it was time for another blood test in August, that test showed that I was going Hypo (T4F 1.4 T3F 151) so the dr tells me to stop taking all of the PTU as in don’t take any PTU. So I stop taking the PTU but still taking the beta blocker (thank goodness). So this past month my legs are hurting and I have body aches and a racing heart when I wake up and HAIR loss:( Had another blood test last Friday HYPER! T4free 23.05 T3Free 651. Haven’t gotten a hold of the dr but I’ve already started taking the PTU just so I feel better. I know his suggestion will be another dose of RAI but I’m still paying for the 1st dose so that’s out of the question. Does anyone have some similar experience or story that’s worse then this? I feel miserable and upset. I know you’re not dr’s, you all are way better!

    Thanks

Hello – I would suggest being REALLY persistent about getting in touch with your doctor before starting back on the PTU on your own. He/she might wish to run some baseline tests for liver function and white blood cell count first before having you start back on these meds.

If the RAI treatment has indeed failed, you have the original three treatment options available to you: anti-thyroid drugs, another round of RAI, or thyroid surgery. Hopefully, you will get some other responses from others who have been in a similar situation and have had to make this decision.

    Take care!
