I feel your pain sister! I put on 17 lbs. between the time I was diagnosed and had RAI treatment and now. Yeah, thought hyper meant losing weight, not gaining it! I had a heck of a time and ended up on Tapazol as well as beta blockers and was forbidden to work out for 2 months.Got off of all of that and have finally gone hypothyroid. Have been on synthroids since Feb 3, started back to the gym shortly thereafter and have dropped 4 lbs. Funny thing is though, even though I am dropping weight and really watching what I eat, my mid-section is horribly bloated like ALL THE TIME. Feel like I look like I’m preggers. This disease is trying a lesson in patience!
Do you still need the beta blockers? Ask the doc if you can try weaning off them if your heart rate remains okay.
Hi
Was diagnosed with hyper/graves on the 12 Jan 09. I started taking anti-thy and beta blockers that evening. Starting to feel a little better (not so many thy-rages). Have learnt to identify and avoid situations that may get me unstuck. My problem seems to be at the moment, big weight gain. Have put on 5kg in the past 3 weeks. Help! I have started to work out, but my heart rate is not getting past 125 due to beta blockers. Have another appt with endo next month. Any suggestions/advice would be greatly appreciated. I just want to be happy and healthy again. Most importantly have two precious children that did not ask for fruity mum, so I have to feel good again
Thanks – PS love this site, thanks to the creator.
I’ve been a Weight Watchers Lifetime member since reaching my goal weight in 2004 — but I’ve been fighting about 6-8 pounds since diagnosis in 2007. I think there are a number of contributing factors, including (1) my metabolism being off kilter, (2) decreased tolerance for aerobic exercise, (3) loss of muscle mass, and (4) increased appetite.
I do think that having the structure of the Weight Watchers program is helpful, though. I am currently playing around with reducing my daily POINTS target to try and figure out what level will get me back to my goal weight. I would also like to start adding more protein and doing some light resistance training to work on my muscle mass.

Feel like I look like I’m preggers.I’ve noticed that as well, although mine comes and goes. So I’m not sure if it’s due to food sensitivities or the Graves. I did read one study that suggested that abdominal adipose tissue has the same type of receptors that contribute to the eye puffiness in TED. Interesting stuff.

You could be right about some foods sensitivities. I’ve been writing down what I eat in an attempt to make sure it’s not just an increase in calories that tend to sneak in, especially where you’re stressed. Looking at dairy as a culprit in some respects but like you I"ve noticed that the bloating comes and goes. The other is that last week I was down 4 lbs from where I started and this week I’m like 3 pounds OVER where I started. How does this fluctuation happen? I so don’t understand it all!
And yes, I am off of the beta blockers and have been for about 3 weeks. Thus far my heartrate while doing cardio training has been pretty good. Still worried about the muscles. They hurt the day I work them out but not past that. In the days when I as building muscle, I hurt for a couple of days.
It’s so hard to stay positive when you have "muffin top" for the first time in your life. It throws my confidence and self perception for a loop. And no, I"m not that shallow but I work in an industry where first impressions are very important so I have to remain confident and poised. This is not helping that cause!
