Hi, just checking in to wish everyone a Happy New Year and to report that everything is going great at the 3 month post thyroid surgery milestone. Things of interest, I truly do feel a little bit better each and every day, and I have not one regret that I had this surgery to correct the hyperthyroid issue. Things of concern, my cholesterol / triglyceride levels took a huge jump right after surgery, I am reluctant to start statin type medications so I will be setting goals and doing everything I can with diet and exercise to get those levels back to normal range.

My eyes are still quite dry, still a bit of double vision, but I feel very blessed that it is what it is. I know I am stablizing because I can wear my glasses more consistantly throughout the day. I have had what I consider vision changes by the hour.

My secret to feeling so good right now is: "No Expectations". Simple as that. By reading the post on this board for a year and a half prior to the agonizing decision to go with surgery I learned two very important things. 1. Everyone is different, and their experience with this illness is different. 2. Healing takes time. I try not to worry about whether or not I am getting better fast enough or if something else is going wrong, I just send gratitudes everyday, "that it is what it is" and enjoy the littlest signs of progress and I don’t dwell on the backslides. May 2011 be a year of smiles.

Hi Ruby, nice to hear from you! So glad you are doing well post op. I had the same positive experience with my surgery. No doubts, no regrets with my choice.

I tried to scan your earlier posts, to see how you have been doing with TED. Did you have any TED surgeries? Is your favorite eye drop still (I think you said Systane in the purple box…?) Do you plan to have strabismus surgery for your double vision? I did, last September, and it changed my world in a very good way. Are you eyes very photophobic? The tears, light sensitivity and dry eyes are still big problems for me. I still have double vision looking up more than about 30%, and also looking to the extreme left, but the strabismus surgery was easy, and I can look straight ahead now. A huge improvement, and life changing in the world of social interaction, looking at people. Plus, the muscles in my scalp, neck and back are not in spasm all the time. I am going to physical therapy to get help in recognizing my normal, before-TED head position. I had to use my downard vision to look at anything before the strabismus surgery.

Re the statins and your lipid panel. I am not aware of any relationship between them and Graves’ and/or post op after thyroidectomy. Was that an additional comment, or do you believe there is a relationship> Just wondering..
I think your goals of food moderation and exercise make a lot of sense before getting involved with statins (as you said."

Thank you for stating the two things you have learned. I think it will be very helpful to others on the board. I do think Graves’ and TED have definitely been life changing for me, and there is no way I can it is in a good way. But I have moved to the "it is, what it is," stage, and I am grateful for the health insurance and assets that I have that has allowed me to get three surgeries, plus two more for 2011, and all those labs and appointments. Even the eye drops and ointments are super expensive, and they must be gotten over the counter. I hope the need for them decreases after my next two surgeries on my eyelids. I am looking forward to an improved outcome, but sure not looking forward to the surgeries.
Nice to hear form you! I just read the Phoenix has SNOW! That must be a big surprise!

Shirley, I am glad you are doing better with your eyes. To answer your questions, I have been blessed with mild symptons of TED, I feel so fortunate. Light sensitivity has been a way of life for me, I go nowhere without very large, very dark, sunglasses. Now, they are prescription sunglasses LOL. I haven’t had any surgeries, and my double vision is mild and somewhat intermittant, ie: lying down (looking up) and upon waking. It resolves itself quickly, and then only troubles me later in the day if I am looking up. The opthologist-neurologist thinks that i am now stable. I am believing on his words. As for the connection between the lipid panel and post surgery, I do think there is a connection. Perhaps it stems from being in the hypo zone for awhile, and just needs a liitle time to get back to normal, which is another reason I am reluctant to jump on the medication band wagon.

I truly am looking forward to the NEW YEAR…I will check in again at the 6 month mark, but I am always around if anyone has a question, just send me a pm…I know it really helped me to talk to someone who was on the path ahead of me.
