I’m fairly new at GD myself, but from what I’ve learned so far, the thyroid gland stores thryroid hormone so that you really should’t notice a difference in only 4 days. I understand it can take 4 – 8 weeks to notice a difference. Frani

My physician suggests Iodine 131 treatment for “multinodular goiter.”
When I learned of all the precautions about staying away from pets, children
pregnant ones, I got scared. What dammage could it cause them? What
    about me?
I am tired of taking meds for atrial fibrilation, high blood pressure. I
just got a diagnosis 5 days ago. Now I take the anti thyroid medicine that
begins with “P.” I dont think I notice much change in 4 days.
Please consider an answer. Thank you.

    Hi, Audrey:

If you take radioactive iodine, there will be a short period of time in which your neck (where the thyroid has collected the iodine) and your urine and sweat (by which your body excretes excess RAI) are giving off some radiation to the surrounding environment. Children (in utero ones, too) and small animals are more vulnerable to radiation than adults, so it is advised that we avoid them for a week or so. That does not mean isolating yourself utterly, but it does mean not picking them up, holding them against your chest, etc. By and large, this is a safety precaution (like wearing a lead apron to get a dental xray if you are in child-bearing years) to minimize their lifetime exposure to radiation, and not a reflection of how much harm the amount of radiation you might be giving off could do them right now. (Radiation exposure is cumulative over a lifetime.)

And you have to be patient with the PTU. It does not work instantly to control your hyperthyroidism. The thyroid has the ability to store both iodine and thyroid hormone. The PTU interferes with the thyroid’s ability to take up NEW iodine. So, until your body has used up the reserves already there, you will not see the results of taking the drug.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi Audrey,

I know how you feel. I’m in the same boat as I am having to make a decision of either RAI or surgery. Right now I am leaning toward surgery. I just don’t know if I can deal with that RAI in my body.

I suffer from Jan. 94 to Dec. 95 with GD as my doctor gave me every concieviable test but he missed the thyroid altogether. I almost died from this thing and I was finally diagnosed with this in Tucson, AZ. as my mother was dying of Lymphoma. I had dropped 37 pounds and about an ocean of sweat and could not get enough engery. I took PTU from Jan. 96 to March 31. 97 and have been off of all meds since. Now however, I am feeling the symptoms comming back and I now have to decide which treatment I am going to take.

I can sympathize with you and I know what you are feeling and thinking. Just remember that God will take care of us each and every day. On the days that we feel we can no longer go on, He will carry us.

I’m in MN. and could you advise me where you live? I look forward to hearing from you.

    GOD BLESS!

    PAUL

    Dear Paul and Bobbi
Thanks for your information and support. When they give all those
precautions about RIA, I am afraid that it may give me cancer. I plan to
live 30 or 40 more years. And do not want to get cancer of anything
    the I 131. RAI.
From Audrey in Florida near Orlando
