Hello, folks….long time member of these boards but had to re-sign up again; forgot handle and password…
Anyway, here goes:
I have been on a 1200-1300 calorie diet since about January 5. I have been eating 5 smallish meals a day.
My levels were fine in November.
On January 11th, I weighed myself; 2 pounds more than last week. I attributed it to maybe too much salt from the little bag of pretzels that I had (all 100 calorie bags) and figured, Let me stay with the program and weigh myself next week.
Next week came; same thing…was still 2 pounds more than the prior week.
I have been losing weight according to my clothes — all a lot looser and measurements (got discouraged with the figure on scale and have been doing once a week measurements instead of weight)
Week before last, I checked my weight: about 8 pounds more than what the original was — and checked again today: still 8 pounds more than I was at my “starting weight” January 5.
What could be wrong???
I was supposed to go to the endo today; I chickened out due to the figure on the scale. I am going to see my other doc tomorrow for a blood pressure maintenance check up; I am almost afraid to step on that scale.
Is this doc going to believe me when I tell her what I said here??? I will be glad to bring her my diet/meal diary!!! She can see for herself.
ANyway, is it possible my TSH can be out of whack???? It was normal in November and has been normal for the last 5 years.
What could be causing this “weight gain” if it isn’t an out of whack TSH maybe sending me to the low side????
What’s going on here???
On another board somebody said “Why are you getting so upset? you are obsessing over that figure on the scale even though you are loosing weight” — that isn’t the point: where in heck would 8 more pounds come from, all in a space of about 3 weeks to a month????
Anybody know what might be going on here???
Hello and welcome back! I would get your endo appointment rescheduled as soon as possible, as fluctuating thyroid levels would be the #1 consideration to look at.
There are plenty of other issues that can cause unexplained weight gain, so definitely take in your food plan to your doctor for a review. There are other medical conditions that can cause weight gain, plus more common issues. Have you added a new medication to your regimen? Have you been consuming foods with a lot of sodium that could cause water retention? Were you eating a super restrictive diet at the first of the year and then the weight came back when you returned to normal eating patterns?
Whatever the cause, definitely get this checked out!
1-) I am not a salt freak. I rarely add salt to anything and I eat nothing with added salt.
2-)This is a 1200-1300 calorie diet based on about 5 small meals.
3-)It is very strange — this seemed to begin when I started this diet about January 5 — I weighed myself that week; following week 2 pounds more.I got discouraged and went to a tape measure instead — I am losing inches and everything I have is bigger and you can see that I am losing…
I weighed myself a few weeks ago: that’s where I saw the weight gain of several pounds more than Week 2 of the diet when 2 pounds more were there.
I like to eat rough cut oatmeal. LOVE rough cut oatmeal! that is all I have for breakfast: I put it in a crock pot and add water and a little dab of butter to give it body and I add cinnamon and ginger and cook it on high for 2 hours.
This is a stupid question but can this “weight gain” be linked to something like oatmeal daily — do carbohydrates hold water, or what???
I eat about 150 grams of carbohydrates a day.
I went back for my blood pressure maintenance; while there, I had my TSH and everything else thyroid checked; that was Thursday afternoon (fat lot of good a TSH and thyroid tests will do in the afternoon; usually it is morning that is checked. I got the nurse practitioner and not the doc (I don’t think iw ill be returning there; the practice is too big and you never get the same doctor when you come in.)
My regular endo is away on an emergency that has to do with family — I won’t be going to see him for a check up until a month from now.
If it is no thyroid what the heck can this be?
Can this really be related to the oatmeal? Yah, this is a stupid question but none of this mess began until I started to eat the oatmeal religiously for breakfast since about start of November.
Nobody has called me back with lab results. I will call there tomorrow.
Well, this is a bit of a dumb answer, maybe, but…have you considered it might be the SCALES. Go to the drug store, see if weights are similar.
And, as Kimberly said, go back to the endo. This is not an embarassing thing, it is a mystery! Of course you want to be sure you are ok in all ways.
Shirley@Shirley – Thanks for your post…sometimes, we can miss the most *obvious* of possibilities!
@letsgomets – I’ve never heard of oatmeal being a problem, but it should be easy enough to test by cutting it out for a couple of weeks.Weighed myself on a doggie scale and on a new scale…same thing…
And every lab test I took last Thursday is normal.
So what’s going on here???
I will skip the dang oatmeal for 2 or 3 weeks and see if anything happens.
This is weird…and I don’t know what else it could be.
