I suggest you get a copy of Dr. Ridha Arem’s book “The Thyroid Solution”. It goes into detail about the emotional issues, and his opinion is that a proper TSH for someone on thyroid replacement is between 0.5 and 2.0. He also recommends dual hormone (T4 plus T3) therapy for those who aren’t returned to good health on T4 alone.
Read the book and find a doctor who will work with you according to those principles. That isn’t always very easy, but it’s worth the effort.
For me to feel well and not have hypo symptoms, my TSH must be under 1, and I also need both T3 and T4. It made such a difference in my life I could write a book chapter telling you about it.
I still have some problems with my emotions that didn’t exist before Graves’, and wonder if there is some damage to my brain from being undiagnosed hyperthyroid for so long. I’m learning to deal with it by viewing the emotional state as something separate from “who I am”, and still taking responsibility for my behavior and my effect on others.
