    Hi all,

What medicines were you prescribed in conjunction with the IV steroids to ease the side effects (sleep meds, heart meds, liver, or eye pressure drops etc). Could you please share the name and dosage? Just curious what is out there to easy the side effects of the med.

Also, what tests did you take before, during, or after (if any) for the heart or liver etc.

    Thank you!!

No meds. Eye pressure not a problem, not a steroid responder. No tests prior or after, no preexisting diseases except Graves. No side effects, not even insomnia or weight gain, which can occur with steroids. I have inhalant allergies, so I always feel great on steroids!

    Hello one and all,
It is nice to hear that some individuals do not experience side effects when on steroids. Some individuals for good reasons are very worried about going on steroids. I worked very closely for many years with a Graves’ patient who had to go on steroids for her polymyalgia rheumatica. In her case she wanted to prevent an uncommon complication– giant cell arteritis –an inflammation of the arteries that supply the head. She was not only very worried that the steroids would affect her mentally but also worried about of losing her sight as she had good sight only in one eye. Any way she took the steroids, felt no bad side effects and saved the sight in her good eye.
Choosing a treatment is not easy. Being able to share the information is valuable. I wish you great success with your treatment.

Ellen, please read the Mayo Clinic site, and other reputable sites, about giant cell arteritis. You will see the treatment is steroids, to prevent vision loss.
I think we are not welcome to morph into the field of medicine.

Ask your doc these questions, maybe he/she might be willing to prescribe a short time sleep aid during the time you are taking steroids.
In my own experience, steroids ramped me up a bit so you feel like you have boundless energy. i did feel very hyper, and slept less well.
I had no directed tests because I was on steroids either before or after the steroid bursts. I had oral prednisone for 5 days, with dose decrease each day,
and I had IV steroids to reduce pressure on my optic nerve because of the enlarged eye muscles pressing on the optic nerve-prior to having an orbital decompression.

snelsen, I did take a look at the giant cell arteritis article on the Mayo Clinic site. The article is very good and confirmed what the gal who was treated for giant cell arteritis told me. It was very easy to locate the article on the site. I won’t forget that the Mayo Clinic is a very good source and will visit it more often.
