Hi-I’m just curious if anyone has ran across any research about if Graves can cause swollen lymph nodes?

I found a lump in my armpit about 2 years ago. I had a mammogram, ultrasound, venipuncture, and biopsy. They reported that it was just tissue changes, whatever that means. I have seen the specialist a few times since. We come to think that the lump they actually biopsied may not be the lump that I feel. He thought it is a clogged pore, but I think it is a swollen lymph node.

So, it also seem like the lymph nodes around it are swollen too, but can’t be felt. I can only see them if I pull the skin back a little. I am going to see him again this week. Doctors just don’t seem very informed about Graves though. Its very frustrating. I’m going to push for it to be removed, but am just nervous. I actually think I would be more relaxed if I knew it could be Graves related.

I don’t have any other symptoms. I have not been sick.

I had RAI 4.5 years ago and have been stable on my meds. I think my antibodies are probably high at points, given that I tend to have eye puffiness.

When we have Grave’s, it is at the forefront of our mind. It is the first thing we think of when something is amiss. I too had a lumpish thing under my arm…and of course was told it was “nothing” after an ultrasound scan. Sometime after that, I went on a cruise and attended a “Health Class” (the kind where there is a decent presentation and then they want you to sign up for their vitamins and seaweed wraps), the young lady that gave the presentation made a huge deal about deodorant. She told us that most deodorants contain aluminum, and that it was toxic to us. Our skin is a large organ, and under our arms are many lymph nodes, (more in women than men, I believe). She recommended a product that can be found at the health food store. I started using it, and the lump went away. Perhaps it was an allergy to my former deodorant choice. It is true for me, that the “more natural product” does not work as long as the products with aluminum and other chemicals. But I am content.

@smjrusso – I’ve heard a handful of stories about a connection between swollen lymph nodes and Graves’, although I haven’t found a really good resource on this. Here’s a case from 1990:

I’ve also seen several references to a connection between rheumatoid arthritis and swollen lymph nodes, so if you are having joint pain, stiffness, swelling, redness, etc., that would be worth checking out as well.
