I have recently been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and TED and was started on methimazole last week. I was beginning to feel the foggy brain get a little better but after 4 days I broke out in a rash and hives. The endocrinologist told me to stop the methimazole, went to see him yesterday and I am about to start PTU today. My question is how long does the rash last? I’ve been off the methimazole for a week now and I am still breaking out. I tried Benadryl today and am waiting to see if that helps. If not, I guess I have to go back to the doctor in case it is something else.

Hello and welcome! Hopefully, others who have had to deal with this issue will jump in here and share their experiences.

In general, pinpointing the cause of a rash can be tricky…some patients do have this type of skin reaction as a side effect from anti-thyroid drugs. However, in other cases, the skin issue is actually caused by the hyperthyroidism itself and will resolve once thyroid levels are stabilized. Hopefully, you will see some relief soon.

    Take care!
