New to the forum! Just completed 12 weeks steroid therapy for TED; so far, successful. But my two eyes now look very different–one bulging, the other small. Anyone know of great makeup tips to help them look more even until they might improve or change, with or without surgery? Trying not to obsess, but having a hard time.
JanetHello and welcome! Hopefully, others here will chime in with their suggestions.
I actually went the complete opposite route when I started getting TED symptoms (luckily mine are mild/moderate) – I stopped wearing eye makeup completely. I just didn’t want anything near the eyes that could be irritating. Saves a lot of time with my morning routine, too.
Take care – and please check back to let us know how you are doing!
Hi Janetf,
Welcome to the Forum. This a great resource for information and advice from fellow sufferers. As someone who has been diagnosed with severe TED, I also cannot stand make up near my eyes either. I have grown my fringe long and although it covers part of my eyes, it has limited the strange looks and staring that happens when I am out in public. Not sure if this is an option for you, but hang in there. The Eye Disease has been the most frustrating and challenging part of my journey, but I have drawn strength (that I didn’t know I had) and inspiration from my fellow Warriors here. Best wishes on your journey.
Cheers
Debbie
(A.K.A. Robboford)Hi Janet,
Might not be helpful, or what you’re looking for, but I gave up on the eye makeup, too. The eye irritation made it difficult, but the double vision made it nearly impossible. (Mascara wand and no depth perception? Not a good combo;).)
My two eyes have looked very different for a while, now. I had to acknowledge that when people look at my eyes, they’re probably not noticing whether or not I have makeup on. People that know me and care about me don’t care about the makeup. People that don’t know me probably don’t really think about me that much to notice. (Full disclosure–they can’t see my worst eye clearly because I have a film over one of my lenses, which also causes it’s share of stares and double takes. They will ask why only one lens got steamed up. But no mention of why no make up. And I already wear bangs.)
I’ve gained some new perspectives and priorities on this TED journey. I’d agree with others that this has been the most challenging part of Graves.
Best of luck!
Thanks for the warm welcome! Alas, curly hair and bangs aren’t a happy match for me. I do believe my glasses help mask the effect and I’ve become adept at tilting my head in such a way that minimizes the difference to the onlooker. Gave up eyeliner when TED first started, as even the most waterproof stuff dissolved with my watery eyes. Have been referred by a friend to a local clinical cosmetologist. She works primarily with post-mastectomy patients, but if she’s got mad Hollywood-style skills, maybe she could work wonders. Here’s hoping to fool some of the people some of the time.
Hang in there, fellow posters!
JanetHi. One of my eyes looks more open than the other due to lid retraction so I wear my eyeliner a little thinner on the eye that appears larger and thicker on the other eye. I think it helps a little. If I don’t wear any eye makeup its far more noticeable that my eyes don’t look the same right now.
