Curious how many of you Gravesters also suffer from what is considered GAD or Generalized Anxiety Disorder or OCD of varying degrees.
I have abnormal anxiety about illnesses, dental concerns, work, upcoming events of any kind. For example, if I get a cavity I’ll be up for all night and depressed about the possibility that the same pains I felt in that tooth I felt in others and what if the dentist didn’t see and missed that I have cavities in other teeth too? Then they will fall under the radar, I’ll have to get root canals which themselves might fail and I could have dentures by the time I’m 40. I have great fear about losing my teeth. Normal people don’t think this way. I’ve changed dentists 4 times in 1 year because none of them could find the cavities I just knew were there.
I’ve had OCD of varying severity come and go. Washing my hands several times a day. Not wanting to touch toilets even in my own house or other fixtures or things I deemed on a whim to be “contaminated” and thus unclean.
Another thing is my hair is thinning because of the Graves’, I’ll obsess over the fear of being bald, get tired of that issue and move on to another perceived problem until I eventually come back full circle to my teeth. I’m not on any medicine and it’s marked in my file a GAD-Graves’ related.
But I know it has to be Graves’ related. Does anyone else deal with this irrational fears over things? I can’t be the only nut
Welcome Wilson! I definitely can trace the mental effects to whether I’m too high or too low with my thyroid hormones. For me anxiety sometimes extreme goes with too much hormone and depression and lethargy with too little. Teeth anxiety happens to a lot of people do you ever get the famous teeth falling out dreams? It’s good that you are aware of it though – it helps me to remind myself about the Graves influence when I notice my emotions getting intense and it helps me to detach some. Usually then it is time for new labs and a dosage change!
Hello – This is a nice video from our 2012 San Diego Conference from Dr. Ira Lesser that talks about how Graves’ disease symptoms can overlap with other issues, such as anxiety:

Sometimes, there *is* another underlying disorder that requires separate treatment, but in other cases, getting thyroid levels stabilized alleviates the symptoms.
Wilson, I bought an insane number of hats when my hair was coming out and thinning. During that time I used shampoo and style product that were each a thickener too, both made by Every Man Jack. However, there should be other brands out there.
It has been three years since my thyroid surgery, and for the last few years my stylist has kept thinning my hair because she says it is too thick. So keep the faith.

Tym, you’ve made me feel better than you know. Now I have one less thing to worry about
