i have graves disease and i am hyper. i did rai back in 2011 and after i did that a few weeks later i started feeling really weird so my endo did some test and told me that the rai didnt work and it just dumped all the hormones into my blood stream and thats why i felt really ill. so after that i went a long time with no insurance and thinking that the rai didnt work and she told me before i lost my insurance was to start thinking about surgery cause i’ve been on every meds for hyper and none worked.

so this year i finally got back on insurance and i went back to my same endo and she wanted to see where i was at since it been so long since i had seen her and when i got my results back come to find out the rai did kill off my thyroid and she said everything looked normal and that i was good for now, dont need to be on any type medicine and she’ll see me in 3 months.

well since that last visit i have not been feeling good at all and i have been to urgent care more then once. they keep running the same thyroid test over and over again and all they tell me is “everything looks normal” and then they go through everything they tested for(i have such bad brain fog i cant remember what)and say its “normal” and even at my regular doctor appt last week i was telling the doctor that i still wasnt feeling good and told her my history with graves/being hyper/doing rai cause she was a little concerned as to why i’ve been to urgent care so many times in the past month. she did the same test that everyone has done and been doing and got my results this morning and once again they tell me everything is “normal” and that they’re going to mail me my results too but i feel that they are not listening when i say that i dont feel fine and that i feel sick 24/7 with no relief. these symptoms are really slowing me down and affecting my school. im just really frustrated and its making me depressed cause its just making me feel like they’re making me think this is all in my head like im making it up. my next appt with my endo isnt until next month and i honestly dont even know what else to do.

Hello and welcome! We are fellow patients here, not doctors, but here are a couple of thoughts…

First, it can also be helpful to document in writing *all* of your symptoms. The more specific you can be, the better. For example, “I can’t walk up a flight of stairs without stopping to rest” or “I sleep for 10 hours a day and I still wake up exhausted” is more helpful in trying to put the puzzle pieces together than “I’m Fatigued”.

It’s also helpful to get hard copies of your thyroid labs, so you can see for yourself where your levels are. The “normal” ranges for TSH, T4, and T3 are fairly wide, and some patients find that they feel their best at a specific point in the range. This might shed some additional light on what is going on.

Don’t let anyone make you feel that your symptoms are all in your head. You know your body, and you know that you don’t feel right! Please be persistent until you can get some answers. You deserve to get your quality of life back!
