    Hi all,

It has been about three weeks since my RAI procedure and I’m only now feeling really moody and “up and down” emotionally. Has anyone else found this to be the case as they have gone hypo? I’m a little worried, since I was hoping that the RAI would take care of many of those symptoms.

    Best,

    Ms. Graves

Hello – Hopefully others will chime in here, but if you start experiencing other symptoms of hypo before your next appointment (fatigue, constipation, slow pulse, joint pain, weight gain, cold intolerance, etc.), it’s worth calling the doc’s office to see if you can get in for a quicker set of labs.

The risk of eye issues is increased for RAI patients who are allowed to go too hypO before starting replacement hormone, so don’t be afraid to be persistent with your doc’s office!

    Hello,

I have had to go through the RAI procedure twice now for my Graves and I can say I had the exact same thoughts and symptoms afterwards both times. For me it took a couple months of constant monitoring of my thyroid levels and adjustments of levothyroxine until most of my symptoms went away. The only advice I can give is to stay strong and keep a positive midset because it does get better.

RAI takes a while to fully do its work, and then your body takes a while to fully react, so there’s almost always a period of up/down feelings. The same kind of thing can happen when you are going through dosage changes of replacement hormone — there can be a few weeks of unsettled symptoms — and it’s important to ride it out, we cannot tell day to day where our levels lie, because symptoms of each imbalance (hypo and hyper) can be the same. Typically you need at least six weeks to see the results in your blood levels and be sure of how it’s going.
