Guess it’s back on the Claritin…
How long will this last? I am not thrilled about being on meds in the first place, so adding allergy meds to the bowl of pills in the morning doesn’t thrill me. I had taken it for 3 weeks as I was told the itching could last 2-3 weeks. Off it for the past 4 days and itching like mad again. Is this a problem? Or is it okay to take Claritin “forever” for it to stay on the methimazole?
I have an appt with endo in 2 weeks…. looking forward to asking lots of questions
Thanks,
JenniferHello – You might check with your pharmacist or call your endo’s office to see if they can answer that quick question for you.
The itching can potentially be caused by an allergy to the medication…or just from the hyperthyroidism itself, so you definitely want a professional to help you sort through this and decide on next steps.
Why don’t you give the doctor a call this week? It makes me nervous that you won’t get in there for two weeks.
Take care,
Nancy
I started itching long before I was diagnosed with GD and I itched during medication. I am off all medication and I know when I am getting hyper as I start to itch again. Everyone has different reactions to all medication but I myself can’t blame the medication.
Renee
Hi Renee, ohhh I really do feel for you! I remember the itching alright! Not sure I can help you but will share anyway. Around about 4/5 months before I was diagnosed, I got really really super itchy!! It drove me nuts. It got so bad I carried around and slept with a long plastic kitchen utensil/fork thing, to scratch with. It was a real major itch that made me physically jumpy. It didn’t dawn on me at the time there was anything wrong(duh!), and I managed to convince myself I had bed bugs or something – it seemed much worse at night! I even dragged my mattress outside and sprayed both sides with fly spray! (yep -crazy!)) Well, turned out it wasn’t bugs lol I was very hyperthyroid and my liver was in bad shape too, both due to undiagnosed graves. Good story is that once my Free T4/T3 levels finally became ‘normal'(this took over 4 months) and stayed that way – the itching stopped. I have noticed the itching has returned but not as bad, a couple of times when I have lowered my dose too much and ended up hyper. So for me, it could be the hyperthyroidism itself and/or my liver due to everytime I become hyper it affects my liver too. Mind, it doesn’t really matter which one as for me, they occur together.
So I’m wondering, what are your current levels and have you had your liver checked?Hi Butterfly007,
I do have problems with my liver, I have fatty liver disease but I never used to drink alcohol as I was always the driver. I have back scratches in the sewing room, in my bedroom, in the caravan, in the laundry. Like you I get itchy at night. I was undiagnosed for 3 months. I have had no medication for 3 years and my thyroid is still with me. My levels go up slightly then they are fine, I have blood tests every 3 months. Sorry I do not know my T4/T3 and I don’t ask my doctor unless she tells me my levels are up, so far so good. I hope you can get your thyroid under control I wish you all the best. -
