Just got this from my medical site. Hope ok, Kimberly. It should be of great interest to a few peeps on the forum!! It is an FDA announcement, and approval, about a drug for hot flashes. If you go to the site, and I think you can, read the entire article.

The FDA has approved paroxetine (Brisdelle), a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, to treat moderate to severe hot flashes associated with menopause.

ShirleyHi Shirley. I’ll definitely be reading and following this since I’m struggling with a surge in my flashes…more like my slow burns. They are becoming very frequent, bothersome, and I’m starting to experience anxiety with some of the them. Best way to describe them is my entire core..deep down feels like a blast furnace…my back and chest feel like they are on fire from the inside. No sweating or visible signs. I’ve been officially menopausal for 7 months (since I believe you have to be 12 months without a period before its official). So how long does this agony last? I’m sure the GD is making it worse.
Holy moly!
Karen
PS. I took a serotonin uptake inhibitor (Effexor) for many years. The withdrawal from that drug was one of the worst experiences of my life. So I would approach these drugs very cautiously. Swore I would never take another one.
Hi Gabe!
Yes, I know there are many complexities with SSRI’s.
I was thinking of you when I sent this. At least for interest.
My hot flashes were not as bad as yours. Lasted, but quite mild, about 18 months. Every once in a while, I’d soak everything I was wearing. But infrequent.
ShirleyI’m going to file this one away – sounds great! Fortunately, my hot flashes are gone!! I think they were a way for my body to get rid of the extra fluid in my system after the surgery – similar to what happened after my children were born.
So, looks like I get to wait a few more years (I hope), before they come back:)
BTW, Thursday (9 days post TT), I felt good for the first time – I really felt like myself again! I am hopeful that this is it and I’ll continue to feel better – and really hoping that the Synthroid is at a good level and I won’t turn hypo…
Thanks – I’m going to go read the article:)
This is also featured in the New York Times Science section.
For sure, this is no “answer” and it does not come without serious consideration, for SSRI’s (one family of anti-depressants) come with several significant side effects, which must be thoroughly known and understood, before trying this drug.
In the NYT article, there is disagreement of just how effective this is.I did not like the hot flashes I had, but they were infrequent and inconvenient. If I had them like you, Gabe, I would be reaching out for ideas to diminish them and/or decrease the frequency of them, without giving yourself another problem. Unfortunately, menopause/hot flashes, and all that goes with it, don’t have an easy fix, and both of them TAKE TOO LONG to resolve.
We want the time to go by rapidly, for these two things, but it goes by too rapidly for so many other things! Like, say, summer in SEattle!
ShirleyHi,
I tried The SSRI route too, but my system does not like them at all. I was totally wiped out for days. also the Dr. did not take my glaucoma into consideration. Most anti depressants can not be taken including lyrica, Cymbalta and gabapentin for nerve pain (shingles et. al)
