I had a TT just over a month ago and I am feeling very depressed & Stressed out lately. Just wondering if this could be due to anything from the TT? Anyone else had a similar experience?
I had a TT, and I had so much to do, and I did it all too soon after TT, that my experience is not very helpful, too much other stuff going on. (Back to work too soon, new baby, post TT, breast feeding, disinterested husband, to mention a few!~) I did not feel depressed, I don’t think, but I did feel a bit of a letdown. Being hyper had been SO STRESSFUL! And I had a hard time believing that I might actually be a normal person again soon. I had a short time of dipping into hyPO, and found that was (really!) just as bad as being hyper, just different. Felt like a slug, hard to get out of bed, constipated, and all the other hyPO symptoms. So I think I did find the post TT period both stressful and depressing. But not an acute depression. Just kind of sad, that all of this was happening to me at the age of 24. I felt it was not fair.
Not sure this helps!
ShirleySorry to hear you’re feeling down and will be very interested in updates since I’m having my TT in less than three weeks.
I have already wondered if I would feel depressed afterwards for a couple of reasons: I think my Methimazole has finally gotten my levels to a place where I am probably feeling some hypo symptoms and I gotta tell ya, as much as I was looking foward to “slowing down” a bit, I’m thinking hypo isn’t much fun, either. I found myself wasting an entire weekend being sluggish, tired, lazy, and unmotivated and it really depressed me. I didn’t want to get up and do anything, but I didn’t want to just be lying around, either. I was stuck in between and didn’t like that place. I really think if it weren’t for me having to get up and go to work on Monday I would still be lying around feeling depressed.
The other thing I wonder about is that since I have spent so much time being full of energy and not being able to sleep, will the contrast seem like a depression to me? Will my lack of desire to get up and clean the house be a result of low medication, the stark contrast of my too-high energy, an authentic depression, or just the realization that I hate to clean? That’s something I’m going to have to figure out in a month or two and I am trying to accept the fact that I may never feel “normal” again but that I will learn to discover a “new normal”. I may not be as perky and productive as I was before but I may be a lot more calm and rested (I hope).
I’ll be interested to hear other’s comments and experiences and if you remind me in 6 weeks, I’ll let you know what I’m feeling.
Sue@hmm0304– You got some great info from Shirley. Since you are a few weeks out, hopefully, you have another set of labs due soon to see if your dosage of replacement hormone needs to be adjusted. I would mention your depression symptoms to your doc as well at your follow up visit to get his/her feedback – hopefully, you can get some relief soon.
Hi. I’m 4 weeks out and feeling pretty darn good. But do have some swings and inconsistencies in mood and energy. Some of which may be because I’m also menopausal. If you haven’t already, get your levels checked! My personal opinion is that the medical community wants most patients to wait 4-6 weeks post TT to get labs done. I had blood drawn exactly 3 weeks out and I was already hypO (TSH 24.9). So my Levothyroxine was doubled. Insist on labs based on how you are feeling, not what your doctor typically does.
Also, your body is going thru major changes…recovering from a surgery and recovering from what for some is a long time being hyper, AND adjusting to the absence of medications you no longer have to take (ATDs and beta blockers..both of which have their own side effects).
There is nothing quick fix about his damn disease!
Hope it gets better for you,,,,

Hi!
A month out of surgery isn’t too long in the big scheme of things. Your body is recuperating from surgery (although is probably mostly good there), but it’s also adjusting to not having a thyroid and being on Synthroid (levo.). My doctor told me the body uses its stores of hormone for 2 weeks to 2 months post surgery- so you could be coming off of your natural thyroid hormone stores as your body is solely relying on the Synthroid now. Also, it’s possible the Synthroid dose isn’t quite right yet for you, so that can contribute as well if your levels aren’t stable. In a few weeks you’ll get labs and have a better idea what will happen next with your levo. Once that dose is right and you’re stable on it for a few months, you should start to feel better. It took me a good 4 months post TT to start feeling good again after 1 dose increase (and being on it for 2 months). If your depression really becomes debilitating, do talk to your doctor to see what might be the best thing to do until your levels are normalized. Try to hang in there. Cyber hugs to you!
Personally, I did experience moodiness, feeling down, some anxiety (not nearly like when I was hyperthyroid though), but it wasn’t too bad- although I did have bad days. It’s an adjustment.
