Hello all. I was just diagnosed a month or so ago. I just had a baby she is 7 months old, that’s what brought it on. I’m very very symptomatic, very anxious, shortness of breath, heart palps, dizziness, hot flashes, etc… Started taking tapazole three times a day and atenolol once in evening. It helps a little but still having some symptoms. I feel like I’m going to die some days. Anyone else feel like try are going to die? I really want to have more babies so I really don’t want to do the RAI and I don’t want to stay away from my baby to have it done, nor put her at risk in any way. Any thoughts on surgery? Anyone had it done? Was it a success?

Hello and welcome! We do have several regular members here who have been happy with their choice of surgery as a treatment option. Hopefully, they will jump in here. This forum also has a search function (in the top right-hand corner of the screen), so you can run a search for “thyroidectomy”, “surgery”, etc. to read their stories. This is also an informative site regarding thyroid surgery:

It sounds like you are having some extreme symptoms. I would suggest discussing these in detail with your doctor (preferably your endo, but your primary care doc if he/she is more accessible). If you truly feel as if you are going to die, you need to contact your doctor *and* get yourself to the ER ASAP.

Finally, a quick note on thyroid surgery – doctors recommend that you delay trying to conceive until your thyroid hormone levels are both *normal* and *stable*, as this is safest for both mother and baby. This is usually a faster process after surgery vs. RAI (since you don’t have to wait to go hypo first), but it is something to be aware of as you make plans to expand your family. Staying on the anti-thyroid drugs is a third treatment option, although an alternate drug (PTU) is preferred during the first trimester of pregnancy.

    Wishing you all the best!

Hi Ali0420. Welcome to the best place to find some answers, get educated, and vent when you need to. We’re all GDers here so we can all relate. I’m almost 3 weeks out from my surgery and have an active journal going (Gabes TT Journal). There are many of us who have recently gone thru TT for a variety of reasons. Mine were: frustrations with the medication roller coaster (methimazole), averse to RAI since I have a moderate case of thyroid eye disease, I’m menopausal and chances of remission with medication are slim to none, and I want to be DONE with this. I’m very happy with my decision and my progress so far, even if its still early.

I would say my surgery was a success. I’m sure others will weigh in also. Read the treatment options paper in the Announcements section on this forum, keep a journal, and find the best doctors even if you have to get second or third opinions!

    Best wishes,

    Karen
