    Hello all,

    I got good news today – my TSH levels are normal for the first time in over a year. I am on 100 mcg of synthroid and feeling the best I have in months. I was diagnosed 9 months ago.

    I am completely out of shape and I want to start some sort of exercise routine again, but I don’t want to push myself too hard.
    Does anyone have a routine that has worked for them in the past? I need to start out slow, but I do want to gain back some physical endurance.

    Hello – Great news that you are feeling well and your labs have stabilized!

    Hopefully, you will get some additional responses, but it’s important to start *slowly*, since the body tends to lose muscle mass during the time when we are hypER. Bobbi, one of our message board facilitators, shared that she started getting back in shape by doing bicep curls with paperback books, as that was all she had the strength to do!

    Other patients have had good luck working with a physical therapist or with a sports medicine clinic. Whichever route you chose, go slowly, listen to your body, and don’t try to tackle too much too soon. Take care!

    Hi!

    I had a thyroidectomy about a year ago. I started with just walking around the block (I was very fit before I got sick). 7 weeks post surgery, I swam laps, but it probably wasn’t my brightest idea. I really wasn’t ready for that type of cardio. Maybe 4 months post surgery, I slowly started up on the spin bikes- about 20-30 min 3 times a week. Now, I do 30-40 min. of spinning/ cardio or swim laps. I try to do that about 5 days a week. I used to do weight, pull ups, and dips. Honestly though, when I tried to do it, it made me light headed right away. Kind of freaked me out, so I haven’t returned to any of that. I’ll do push ups or something a little less strenuous when it comes to strength conditioning.
