That title is probably confusing – sorry. I’m referring to the episodes when you are feeling fairly fine for several hours and then all of a sudden you get knocked down hard – no warning. I was really thrilled that all day today I was feeling pretty “normal” and hadn’t even needed to take a tranquilizer or beta blocker. Then I went to the ladies room and on the way back to my desk I felt very light headed like I needed to really focus on walking and needed a wall nearby in case I was going to start to fall over or down. I got back to my desk but even sitting didn’t really relieve it, I still felt light-headed. I was very happy that I wasn’t feeling anxous and wasn’t’ turning it into a panic attack but I was having a hard time talking to people and just wanted to get out of there. When I got up to leave I found my thigh muscles were barely strong enough to get me to my car and my hands were shaky. An hour earlier I was feeling FINE! What I think I hate the most about these is that there is no warning and you never know where you’ll be or what you’ll be doing when they hit. Is this part of our disease or is something else getting me, like maybe a flu?

Second part of this question: I hate aspartame and avoid it whenever possible but last night I was feeling sick to my stomach so I was sipping them for several hours. I can’t help but wonder if this episode today is somehow connected to the aspartame – is it possible for it to affect me almost 20 hours later?

I guess this is a part three to my question: do chemicals that we can usually tolerate fairly well get much LESS tolerable when we’re in hyper mode? I used to be able to use Afrin nasal spray but when I used it two weeks ago it brought on one of these episodes. I usually can get away with small amounts of aspartame once in a while but today, not so much.

Again, wondering if there’s a connection.

Hello – It certainly is possible that sensitivities increase when our bodies are ill. I never had an issue with MSG until after getting diagnosed. Now I know that a meal at my favorite local Chinese restaurant will result in heart palps and a very unpleasant, sleepless night.

It would probably be worth a call to your doc or pharmacist, though, to see if it the light-headedness might be a side effect from beta blockers. Hopefully, you aren’t coming down with the flu…you certainly don’t need to deal with that on top of Graves’!

I’ve heard of patients having delayed reactions to specific foods, so this would certainly be worth keeping tabs on the next time to see if you can spot a connection.

    Take care!

I had some days I would be sitting at my desk and I felt like an out of body experience. My head felt like it was floating and felt a weird sensation of just lightheadedness. I can’t quite explain it.

It passed pretty quickly. And it only happened a couple times. I never had the opportunity to put it together with something I ate or drank though.

You are always there, Kimberly…… thank you.

I don’t think it’s from the beta blockers.. I was on these 6 years ago for over a year and didn’t have this and actually I’m starting to feel better right now so it’s a passing thing. It’s almost like a blood sugar issue maybe, except I ate very, very healthy today.

I’ve heard of several people being sick with a flu the past few days so I’m not going to be surprised if I come down with something. It is what it is. (shrug).

I had blood drawn this morning and see my endo on Monday….I’m guessing he’ll have me increase my Methimazole a little.

Thanks for always replying to our threads….. your job is never-ending!
