Hello –
My name is Stephanie, I’m a 30 year old mom of 3 in Northern AZ. I was just diagnosed with Graves on March 14th after a month and a half of testing. I’m currently on 10mg of Methimazole once daily and I take a beta blocker. I started feeling really out of sorts in January and went to the doc in February, although looking back I think I have had symptoms for at least 2 years, maybe longer. I have been to the doc off and on trying to find out a reason for all sorts of symptoms but was diagnosed with anxiety and IBS. Hopefully I’m finally on the road to feeling like myself! You’ll probably see me around a bit as I am completely overwhelmed and have sooooooo many questions!
Welcome Steph! This is a great place to vent, ask questions, or I sometimes just read what’s going on with other people to know I’m not “crazy” lol! It’s nice to know we are not in this alone and that we have a great support system here amongst each other. Hope to see alot of you, and wish you the best in your road to a normal life again
Hello and welcome! Unfortunately, since the symptoms of hyperthyroidism can overlap other conditions, we often hear from patients who have been misdiagnosed with anxiety, depression, heart issues, etc.. Glad that you FINALLY got a correct diagnosis and have started with treatment!
Hopefully, you have a follow up scheduled with your doc to check out whether that dose of methimazole needs to be adjusted. Dosing is part art, part science, and it’s common to need a dose reduction as your levels start to move into the “normal” range. Also, make sure that your doc is looking at your Free T4 and T3 and *not* just TSH in making dosing decisions. TSH can remain suppressed for quite some time in Graves’ patients, so is not a good benchmark for making dosing decisions.
Please continue to check in and let us know how you are doing!
I believe my doc will be checking everything, my next blood draw is April 1st.
Kimberely – I see you are from PHX, I actually have to go there for my Endo (I’m in Flagstaff and there are none here), can I ask who your doc is? I have only met mine once and I don’t know if I really like her…
Hi Steph – We try to keep doctors’ names off of this forum, but I will send you a PM with the info.
It’s important to remember that selecting an endo is a very personal decision…some patients will “click” with a particular endo’s style, and others won’t. But since this is going to be a fairly long-term relationship, it’s important to find someone that YOU are comfortable with!
