i have been dx with Graves disease about year ago, i have had 15 radiation treatments on my eyes cause they were bulging so bad and i couldnt close my eyes. its helped alot, then in oct of this year i had my thyroid removed , sent me home and i went into shock from lack of calcium. now im back to sleeping with my eyes opened…. dont feel any better. now on the 21st of this month im having orbital decompression on my eyes. well one eye then 2 weeks later the other, i have double vision now and they say it will be worse after surgery… and then might have to get some kind of weights put on my eyelids after that…. CAN ANYONE TELL ME DOES THIS NIGHTMARE EVER END……please
Hello and Welcome! I think we connected earlier today and provided some general information that will hopefully be helpful.
We have some of regular posters here who have had orbital decompression and others who are currently going through the consultation process. Hopefully, they will chime in here!
There *is* an end to thyroid eye disease…although it can be a long, frustrating wait. The fact that you have OD scheduled means that you are that much closer to seeing some relief.
Take care — and please check back to let us know how you are doing!
Rest asssured it does get better. I was diagonosed with graves 6 years ago and am just now doing my od surgeries. I just did the left eye in December and will be going in next Friday for my right eye. I know it all seems like such a long and frustrating process and I won’t lie and say I haven’t shedded a few tears and had my share of anxiety over all of it but it truly does get better. We just need to keep remininding ourselves that it is better than the potential of going blind! Also, I understand that this can be a very frustrating disease at times but that is why we have this wonderful support forum, to help us remember we’re not crazy there are other people experincing the same symptoms and frustrations as us. Hang in there it will get better and the smiles and beautiful eyes will return!!!
Hugs and Best wishes
thank you… im so sorry i am new to this form and didnt know how to work this all to well…. i only just figured some things out today how to work this… my eyes are doing better from the od surgery and then they put prisms in my glasses to align them… but its not working and im severely cross eyed… iam going for another surgery on monday the 19th of august so hopefully this will help……. i just want to get off this roller coaster.

mariHi Mari,
I hope everything goes great with your surgery on the 19th and it’ll finally help.
I wish you the very best.
All of us here are in various stages of Graves’ disease so a lot of us know what you’re going through.
Let us know how you’re doing and stay in touch.Good Luck.
Hugs.
Barbra.surgery seems to have went well… my eyes arent crossing so much… my vision is def alot better… i do still have some double vision when it comes to driving….. go back in 3 weeks and hopefully everything will be lined back up… he said it will take time and the brain has to be retrained to get my eyes back to working properly…… im so hoping this is the last one….. im so tired
mariThanks for the update – wishing you all the best as you go through the healing process.
Dear Mari,
Yes, it does get better! It takes a long time, and there may be some ups and downs (or sides to sides). Prisms are some of the best things ever invented. If you have a “doctor’s change”, the optical shop will usually honor the change and make you some new lenses either free or at cost. Meanwhile, have you ever heard of Mepitac tape? Mercy Surgical, 1-800-637-2950. It is silicone, gentle on the skin and eyelashes, and re-usable for two or three nights.
Take care,
Nancy
