Hi, can anyone tell me if it is advisable to fly with Graves? I have found that I am getting a lot of sinus eye/headaches.

Did this happen before Graves’too? Are you just diagnosed?
I am not aware of Any relationship. Nor has it been mentioned by my docs
I am not prone to have headaches.

Yes got diagnosed in Nov 2012, on 20mg neomecazole. Had a really bad cold/sinus infection in Oct when I was coming back from UK and the flight was terrible. I have been getting a lot of pain around my sinuses since, including eye ache and face ache!

Have you seen a doc about your sinus infection? You may need antibiotics. A Neti Pot/sinus rinse can also really help with sinus pressure and pain. Flying while your sinuses are gunked up can definitely make things worse. I am prone to sinus infections and have Graves and recently flew on an airplane without problems, but I wasn’t sick. Also had sinus problems long before Graves was diagnosed.

I hope you’re feeling better soon!

Hello – Do you have any eye involvement? I’ve not seen studies on this, but I have heard from several patients with eye involvement that they seem to have more sinus issues than they did pre-Graves’.

If you are having any of the common symptoms of thyroid eye disease, a visit to an experienced ophthalmologist might be helpful.

Every patient is different, but mild symptoms of Thyroid Eye Disease can include dryness, swelling, excessive tearing, and a gritty sensation in the eyes. More serious issues can include a “bulging” of the eyes (proptosis) and double vision.

    Take care!

I have non of the eye issues except for eye aches which are part of the headaches and with the sinus pain I have no congestion at all just pain in the ‘bone’ areas like cheekbones, jawbone, teeth hurt, ear-ache etc – very weird and I am finding I can’t stand noise, if TV too loud the base hurts my head! I don’t like this disease, it makes you sound like you are loosing the plot. :-(

I was worried about this but I fly frequently with no issues. I was diagnosed in Sept. of 2012 but even at my worst with full blown Grave’s I was flying. I found riding in the car FAR more uncomfortable than on a place. Depending on your airline – try and pre-board. Just tell the gate attendant you have a disability. It helps – also it will help you speed through the TSA lines.

The planes pressurize at 10k feet. Sometimes upon descent my ears pop feel a little fuzzy but I relax my jaw and it’s fine. Before medication I would wear my sunglasses onboard.
I’ve flown long hauls 10+ hours and short hauls without issue. I do find it much more comfortable to wear compression socks – they really help.

    Cheers!

I really do believe there is a link between the sinus infections and Graves. Of course I’m no doctor but here is my story. Prior to my diagnoses and treatment of Graves I had a sinus infection every month for about a year, I do no exaggerate, my primary care doctor sent me to an ENT and I had sinus surgery. A few months later I got my diagnoses of Graves and my endo told me that the two were related. I’ve since changed endos and the new one told me the same thing. I do not have TED but my eyes do feel like they hurt and are about to explode, like they are being inflated or something weird. Since being treated for Graves over the last two years I’ve only had 2 sinus infections.
