I’ve been off Methimazole for 3 weeks now since I became hypo on it. Had 10 days of feeling really good, but gradually I can feel myself getting palpitations, anxiety, and my heart rate is up around 80, from 68. So going in a few days early for my lab draw tomorrow. Hoping my endo will put me on a really low dose of Methimazole, like 2.5mg to keep things tolerable until after the first of the year, when I can begin talking to a couple thyroid surgeons about getting my thyroid out. My endo won’t like surgery, but I will not do RAI.
I’m spending 6 days in California with my best friend for Christmas, and want to feel good while Im down there. Right now it’s 3:30am and I can’t sleep, which is why Im writing this rambling post! Thanks for listening!Amy
Amy,
I am way too new at this to have a clue how to support you, but I do hope that you are stabilized before your big trip.
Amy, my heart goes out to you. I have been through this so many times I can’t begin to count through the years. It happened to me last time after we purchased airline tickets to Las vegas. I knew I wouldn’t make it with their 101 degree heat so cancelled the flight. Also lost all the money.
I hope it doesn’t last long. Please tell us how you are doing.

Amy!!!
I am hoping you are back on methimazole now, do you know your labs yet?
I have been out of town. Please call again, I will check PM’s but right now, don’t have your phone #.
I hope you do not cancel your trip. Sure, you want to feel your best, but no matter how you feel, you will be with a good friend, in delightful weather.
Also, did your endo give you a beta blocker for your heart rate if it gets really fast? I am thinking and hoping that you are back on your ATD, and by tomorrow, you will feel it, know you are headed in the right direction.ShirleyYou still have a couple of weeks. I’m sure there’s something your endo can do.
I had to go off my methimazole for a while over the summer. Not only was it making me hypo, it was affecting my kidneys (which it isn’t really supposed to do, but it did.) I felt good for about a month before I noticed the hyper symptoms coming back. I went to a family reunion when I was hyper. It’s a good thing my family loves me. I kept them all up late with my insomnia, and my moodiness caused me to say something so uncharactaristically bitchy, that my aunt was a little shocked.
Even if your endo can’t adjust your dose, don’t cancel your trip. Look on the bright side. You can eat whatever you want!
Thanks for the support everyone! I got my labs drawn today, but they won’t have all the results in until Tuesday. This time, my endo is testing FT3, FT4, TSH, TPO, TSI & CMP. I didn’t have an appt so didn’t talk with anyone. It wasn’t until last night at work that I realized I was truly hyper. It just sort of snuck up on me. It was very busy the second I got to work and I was almost panicking over doing something that should not cause me to react that way. At least I was off work today & the weekend. My heart rate at the moment is only 68, but it’s pounding in my chest. It would take a lot for me to cancel my trip. Im pretty heat tolerant even when Im hyper, and it probably will only be in the mid-60’s to 70 when Im there. It’s the Methimazole I just don’t tolerate we’ll and was hoping I would stay hypo or euthyroid long enough to not have to go back on it until after my trip. But not much I can do about it. At least it works, and maybe I’ll tolerate a much smaller dose. If I feel worse over the weekend, I can always call the on-call doc.
Thanks again for being such a great group folks. I feel like I can vent when things aren’t going well. But I’ll try to post when they are going well, too!
Amy
