I am wondering if anyone has had any experience with a 504 plan for accommodations in the school or work environment. My daughter has Graves and had a TT just days before leaving for college. She is having some trouble with focus, concentration and memory. Her dose of Synthroid has been changed 3x in the past year. I did print out 2 bulletins from this site that address this topic, but I am wondering if there is anyone with actual experience going through the process of requesting accommodations under the 504 Plan of the IDEA. She seems to need extended time to complete assignments as well as exams. Any help is greatly appreciated!
thank you!

TT 8/2011From what it looks, 504 seems to be for access. There are some fundamental differences between k-12 and university in relation to support, and this tends to be in accommodations such as a learning disability needing a quiet place to take an exam.
My advice is to have her doctor write a letter identifying specific problems. Provide this to the dean of students’ office, and have this office connect with the office that handles students with challenges.
Encourage her to speak up for herself but also respect the rules and process in the institution. It is important that she gets used to communicating with the faculty herself. However, some disciplines are less inclined to be flexible in providing extended time if completing projects in timely fashion is demanded in their professional fields.
A 504 for medical issues only, often can be useful if she needs accommodations. My advice is be very specific as to, what accommodations you need her to have. A 504 isn’t supervised the same way an IEP is so the school district generally wont intercede on your behalf, the school handles it. So if youre in a good school, you should do well. If the school is clueless (as many are, sadly) you’d need to apply for a full IEP which is a lot more paperwork but has the district overseeing what you want in place.
