2 weeks post RAI and just had CT of abdo for a mass found by GYN on annual exam(had exam before RAI ). Have been on PTU since February 2012 after going into atrial fib at work. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced symptoms with liver since being on PTU . Will do lab work to check liver enzymes tomorrow. Anyone?

Hello – Liver issues are a rare side effect of both methimazole and PTU, although methimazole generally has a better safety track record. The good news is that when patients experience this side effect, the issue usually resolves once the meds are withdrawn.

I’m not familiar with hepatic hemangioma being associated with PTU, but that would be a good question for your endocrinologist.

Hope that you get good news back from your testing tomorrow!

Hi! I had liver issues with methimazole (I never took PTU). I was on a small dose- 5 mg a day- and was tested 7 weeks into treatment. My liver enzymes were approximately 8 times the normal amount. They were completely normal before methimazole (I had a baseline) and whamo, up they shot. I didn’t actually have any symptoms like fever, dark urine, or sore throat. Fortunately, my enzymes normalized once I stopped the medicine. They did my labs 3 days later to see if the enzymes were trending back down, which they were. My primary ordered an abdominal ultrasound to check that all was well and I redid the liver labs later and all was normal.

thank you both for your response. Nerves are a bit jittery. Looking forward to stopping PTU and lopressor and starting synthroid. :)
