I found out that I have Graves on June 14. I was diagnosed because i went to the Dr with a UT infection. He did blood test and found my T3 was 40 .5, T4 was 14.2and my THS was 0.1. I have been taking 30 mg of methimazole for 2 weeks. I am feeling better but 2 things bother me. My vision in my right eye is bad. Will it get better with time or do I need to change my glasses? Also my teeth hurt. Is this a symptom of Graves or medicine or is it a totally different problem?
Hello – If you are having eye issues, it would be a good idea to visit an experienced ophthalmologist who can help you sort out whether your issues are due to Thyroid Eye Disease (TED) or some other issue. One sign that TED is causing compression of the optic nerve – which could result in vision loss if not treated – is if reds suddenly start to look more orange or brown. If that’s the issue you are experiencing, you definitely want an appointment ASAP.
The following is an interesting piece from the American Dental Association on thyroid issues and oral health. Personally, I experienced a lot more dental issues than usual (cavities, pain, chips, etc.) prior to my diagnosis of Graves’.

(Side note: please ignore the section on dosing with methimazole and PTU. This is an older article, and the most recent guidance on treatment of hyperthyroidism actually recommends lower starting doses than what is mentioned here).
Hope this helps!
Thanks Kimberly. This information helped. I have a dental appt. July 2.
I’ll tell the dentist before I go to let them know that I have Graves and the meds that i’m taking. The article from the ADA said that a person with hyperthyroidism should be careful with NSAIDs and never take aspirin. I’ve been taking Advil everyday for my tooth pain. Do you know what is safe to take for pain?
I haven’t noticed a change in the color red. My vision is blurry and letters are doubled. Was hoping it would get better. I just saw my ophthalmologist about a month ago and my vision was ok then.
Thanks
While hyperthyroid (but on meds) I had an intense reaction to the “novacaine” or whatever was given to numb the pain for a dental procedure. The dentist was on the verge of calling 911. That had never happened before. From then on, the dentist gave me a different type of numbing chemical that didn’t contain the “upper” that the previous one contained. So you might ask about that when you go in for your procedure.

Hello – I’m actually not familiar with this issue, so you might check with your doctor or pharmacist. When I was hypER, my endo actually told me to take a baby aspirin a day, because she felt this reduced the possible risk of stroke. This seems to be just one of many areas where doctors don’t agree!
Also, using preservative-free lubricating drops (*NOT* the “get the red out” kind) frequently during the day might be able to get you some relief for the eye issues. Definitely keep your ophthalmologist posted on any changes in vision or symptoms.

Hi Sis,
I have TED too and i get the blurry cloudy vision so its normal with the condition. Keep up with your appointments and hopefully you will be fine and will be ok with time and patience.
