Hi all! Its (finally) summer again & I noticed the dark patches down the right side of my forehead (I noticed last summer) have decided to travel 1/2 way down my cheek & now I have it on the left side as well, just not as big. I have read that thyroid issues can cause this. Diag w/ graves 13+ years ago (I was 22) & put on Synthyroid, but now on Armour. Along w/ RAI in ’99. My meds have been way up & way down most of the years.
My question is…Anyone else have these dark spots that seem to want to take over your face? I live in Northern Michigan, so we only have a few months of summer. (Yesterday it was 48 deg & I had my heat on..LoL) Oh & I dont fake bake….anymore :oP
If so, is there anything to do about it? I never wear makeup now, so I would hate to start wearing it bc its getting worse. Any ideas?
Thanks!!!
~KariShort answer: see a dermatologist for a more definitive idea of what is going on.
In my case, I have some sun damage which caused a couple of darker marks on my face. If you do not wear makeup, do you at least put on sunscreen? As we age, the outer layer of our skin apparently thins out, and sun damage will be more of an issue as time goes on.
Hi Kari,
It could be Melasma. Melasma is mostly associated with pregnancy but my endo said there is also an association with thyroid disease. I had Melasma my first episode with GD. It eventually faded but I had to be very vigilant about protecting my skin from all sun exposure as that will make it worse. There are over the counter skin lightening creams available but you should talk to you Dr. before trying anything and to confirm that is what it is. I decided to let mine fade naturally as I didn’t want to use the cream but it took several months for it to fade. People kept asking me if I had a black eye.

I also have some dark patches on my face and my dermatologist said it was Melasma. He said Melasma is cause by hormone imbalance and the sun. I use a cream sometimes but usually just try to use sunscreen, which helps but I still get dark patches in the summer.
Might also be worth checking out your adrenals, adrenal fatigue and thyroid issues go hand in hand and I’m fairly sure darkening of the skin can be a symptom.

Thanks for the responses! I do wear sunscreen now, but I need to make sure I re-apply it more often. Its yard work time & I sure dont want it to get worse! LoL
I am trying to get a GAP exception thru my insh company so I will be able to see my endo. I will ask him a few questions then about it (thanks for the suggestions!) I just gotta get thru this darn kidney surgery on monday. Then I can focus on that. :o) -
