    Hi,

I have been experiencing TED soreness, burning, irritation and dryness for a few months now and finding it a bit of a struggle, but getting there slowly. I have a few questions: how long is this issue likely to last? Can this TED reoccur again in the future once it has burnt out? And is TED caused by the thyroid gland or the hormones less likely to reoccur once the thyroid is removed or destroyed compared to if its caused by your immune system? Do some sufferers only get TED for a few months while others for a few years etc?
    Thanks.

Hello and welcome! This is a nice article from the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center that talks about the cause and course of TED, as well as treatment options. Every patient is different, so it’s hard to predict exactly what the course of the disease will be for you.

The good news is that once TED burns itself out, the vast majority of patients will NOT see a recurrence, although it is certainly challenging to deal with the active phase — and any subsequent surgeries that may be required.

    Take care!
