Hi All,

I’m 2 months post RAI and today is my first day on thyroxine. I know to take it the same day on an empty stomach w/ water at least 30 min prior to eating. The script also states no calcium/iron or zinc within 4 hours in taking the med. This is a shame as I often have yogurt or milk for breakfast. Have others had to change what they eat for breakfast due to this medication? I will speak w/pharmacist but would like anyone elses input also. I think I’ve read something somewhere about other things that cold possibly block aborbtion but I cannot remember where.

As always, I appreciate the input! Here’s to keeping fingers crossed that I will feel warm again sooner rather than later!

Hi I interpret that to mean supplements. Not food. There is no way I will wait to eat bfsk or omit dairy. I have not done anything different. So I guess consistency is the wisest thing to do regarding lAbs. I will be interested of other responses

Yes, JaneG, the instructions against calcium, etc., refer to supplementation. In other words, don’t take a morning vitamin pill and do not take calcium supplements with breakfast. Wait four hours or more.

Whenever you start a new medication, read the instructions with the pharmacist and have him/her explain what it means. They are the person trained to know what the instructions actually mean (because it is reasonable to assume you would need to avoid yogurt for breakfast, given that statement) and they can save you some misunderstandings as well.

Re: pharmacist: If having dairy for breakfast such as yogurt – take thyroxine on empty stomach, wait 1 hour and enjoy the yogurt. If I’m not eating yogurt, waiting 1/2 hour is sufficient. I figure if I keep the meds and a glass of water next to the bed, I can take the pill the moment I wake up and any waiting doesn’t seem that long.

My endo advised me to take my supplements at night so that’s what I do. I only take BP meds in the morning with breakfast and always have dairy with it. There’s so much to think about but once a routine is established, it’s not so bad.
