I am having a terrible time dealing with getting my first dose of RAI for my Graves. I was diagnosed last December and finally my doctor insisted on the radiation. I was treated this morning, and now I am an emotionally wrecked, crying for no apparent reason. I am at home by myself due to having small children, and the computer is my only hope.. lol… if anyone else it out there going through what I am please comment. I am 30 years old and have been in good health up until all these crazy symptoms started happening. I am so worried that my bulgeing eyes and humungous goiter will never go away… HELP!!!!

When we go in for RAI, we have to go off the meds for a week or so, and a good part of what you are currently feeling is what it’s like to be really hyper — it is awful, I know. But you have taken a step towards being well again, permanently — at least as far as thyroid issues are concerned. So, you have put yourself on the road to being well again. It takes time AT normal levels of thyroid for your body to heal, so do not expect to feel well all at once again — just little by little.

In about a week, your hyperness should peak as damaged thyroid cells release their stored supplies of hormone. If you get really uncomfortable, you might check with your doctor about whether or not there are meds you can take to alleviate some of the symptoms. But this increased hyper period doesn’t last long because the cells that are dumping their supplies of hormone are not making new hormone.

I do hope you are feeling much better, and soon.

    Hi Jamie:
I’m not going through radiation (I had a thyroidectomy) but I do have GD and I know what a struggle it can be. I would assume that once you treatments are complete, the goiter will be less noticeable and eyes will appear more normal. In my case, my eyes didn’t relax until after my surgery so it may be the same case with you (once the radiation has completed its job). As far as being emotionally out of whack, you’re lucky that it’s only just started! I’ve felt crazy from my diagnosis to now lol <img decoding=” title=”Wink” /> I would assume that you’re feeling this way now because your thyroid reacting to the aggressive treatment so it’s misbehaving, for lack of a better word. I think that this is one of those times when you can blame it all on your GD; remind yourself that you’re not crazy, that you can’t control it right now, and that you will adjust to it so be strong and look forward to feeling like yourself again.
This is a great place to vent about it all and we can all understand what you’re going through and what you will go through. We’re all here for you so take advantage <img decoding=” title=”Very Happy” />
